    Feedback Please

I spent a couple of hours today helping a friend sight in his Bushy AR-15, 16 inch barrel. I got it grouping well 55gr Remington FMJ and then switched to the 50 gr frangible Winchester. He needs the frangible for thunder Ranch. All of sudden, it looked like a shotgun pattern. I did notice several groups scattered about. It was so bad, I thought maybe the scope went bad. I slapped on another scope, got it sighted in with FMJ, then switched to the frangible and right back to shotgun pattern. The twist is 1/9. Any thoughts? Could varied powder charges cause this? Unstable bullets?

I seem to remember somewhere on the web reading about bad lots of IIRC Federal frangible that were horribly inaccurate. Wonder if it's a bad lot you're dealing with.

Makes me wonder, talk about frustrating. I thought foe sure the new scope had gone south, it was a Primary Arms 1-8x, I really like this scope, just not the freaking ammo. I also had a case of frangible about 4 years ago that the bullet tips kept breaking off and jamming up the inside of the rifle. Tips in the trigger, in the locking lugs, everywhere. These seem to be exiting fine, just landing all over hell.

I've seen a few barrels that for whatever reason don't like certain types of ammo. As Sean noted, it could be a bad lot.

Have you tried it in anything else?

Likely a sintering issue with the lot, though I wouldn't expect 1/2 MOA from a good batch either.

How about 10 inch groups at 100 yard?

Frangible Ammo is made just to go BOOM. It is highly inconsistent because of the components use to make them is also inconsistent. Frangible Ammo is ammo made to go bang in indoor-ranges and nothing else.

I dug out some 45 gr Fiocchi Sinterfire frangible and it grouped up beautifully. That Winchester 50 gr frangible is crap.
Mechanic and Sean K. like this.

10 MOA is definitely an issue, unless you're shooting barns!
