    New XCR Owner with Questions

I want to get my barrel fluted but I'm not sure if the barrel is thick enough for it. Has anybody done it or know for sure that it can be done? I know the worst case is that I send it to ADCO or E.R. Shaw and they tell me it cannot be done. Shipping will probably be about $50 round trip via ground.

I also want to put a different muzzle brake on it. What do you guys use? I'm thinking either Battlecomp or PWS. The PWS is cheaper but I read that it produces a lot more muzzle blast.

The pistol grip looks like standard AR-15 stuff. Is that right?

Only 9 more days to go before I can take home my rifle

Is the barrel a heavy in 5.56? If not the general answer is no, not enough meat to flute.

PWS will upset your other shooters next to you.

    Standard AR grip.

I got the 7.62x39 rifle which I believe only has one profile. It's got a muzzle brake on it so I can't tell how thick the barrel is. I might have read that the 7.62x39 barrel is the same profile as the 5.56 heavy contour but I can't find where I read that again.

PWS will be no good if there is that much blast. I don't want to be the a-hole at the range.

    Standard A2 grip sounds good.

The 7.62 barrel from what we are told is the heavy 5.56 contour but with the larger 7.62 bore, there is not enough material to flute the 7.62 barrel. They make a 'light' 7.62 now I think if you can get one through Kermit or Nate.

Gotcha. That really answered my question. I have no problem holding up the rifle. The fluting is really just for looks.

Anyone complaining about blast and noise at a gun range is a f'ing pussy.

I have the FSC556 on my 5.56 kit. Noticable increase in noise/blast but not unbearable to be next to. Haven't changed my 7.62 kit yet...waiting for the right deal.

One note on the pistol grip: reuse the XCR bolt. Don't try the AR one.

I haven't met anybody who complained yet but it does discourage new shooters. I shoot indoors a lot where the sound becomes a lot more pronounced. When somebody shoots something very loud girls who are new tends to walk away and not wanting to deal with it. I did have a SVT-40 that I would shoot none stop if the people next to my lanes are being annoying. I managed to send them home every single time.

I actually want a PWS brake on that SKS trooper I will eventually get. I'm just not going to spend $200 on a $400 rifle.

Good tip on the grips. I'll keep the parts.

Now Kermit is supposed to get some parts in by the end of the week, what do you guys think I should order for spares?

Off the top of my head and at the very least: spare buffer, bolt and firing pin. IIRC, RA and Kermit offers a spare parts kit with just about everything you'd need in one bundle.

I must be a pussy, because I hate shooting next to a PWS brake. Every time someone touches a PWS off, it's like getting bitch slapped. The good news is that the recipient will be deaf and numb within 50-100 rounds and then will not notice. I have a PWS brake and I've shot several rifles with them in the past and I have to admit that they work very well. I'm done with them. I usually shoot with family and friends and I really don't want to piss them off with muzzle blast. I love Hogue's AR grip.
