7.62x39 Barrel Cut/ Gas Port. NEED HELP! Pictures!

Hi All! So I have a new XCR MINI and a left over 16in 7.62x39mm HEAVY barrel from my 1st gen XCR. I already have all of the parts necessary to run the 16 and have done with great success however I am now going to send the barrel to ADCO to have the cut it down and re-thread it.

    My questions are this:

    1. What is the shortest recommended length for the 7.62x39mm HEAVY 16in barrel?
    2. Will I need to open up the gas port on the barrel itself? Adco said that can do that however they need the specs on what size etc. to do.

I really would prefer not to experiment once I get the barrel back so whatever your recommend would be great.

Many thanks for your help and appreciate any info.

    Warmest Regards,

    Drew P.

You are or aren't sending it to ADCO?

Is the 16" barrel a standard gas length?

Check Sean's gas port size thread. I think RA offered an 11" from the factory. 12" was the more common offering. I've got a 5.56 that's 10.5 that runs fine with a can on it. 10.5 is pretty short on the dwell though.

It's easy to open up the port on the barrel if you need more umph. Just go slow/small on the drilling.

Thanks for the reply! and sorry for my typo! Yes, I plan to send the barrel to ADCO. I'll take a look at the threads you posted. So you think 11in would be a good way to go? Thanks again!!

12" with a standard length gas system/upper on the 7.62x39 is the recommended length by RA. You can get shorter ones to run....but expect to have to play with port sizes, add a brake (if you're not running a can all the time), and possibly polish the chamber.

I say 12" if you plan to use a suppressor and their warranty. Plus with a suppressor you may not need to open up the port due to the already extra back pressure. What Gen gas block are you going to use? I can't remember what the shortest length the 7.62 pistols came with when they were released But seeing that you don't want to experiment, I would probably go with that.

I have 7.5, 10.5, 12, and 16inch. The work has already been done on how to get most barrels to run reliably ( Sean K's posts ).

They all run the same except for the extraordinary increase in blowback with a suppressor on.

Let us know what your end goal is, or you're going to get A LOT of info from us ;-)

This is a 7.5 on a Micro with a Saker762. Search around on our picture thread. Some of our guys have done great custom work to they're XCRs. I'm always jealous of the guys that get that perfect Can to Upper fit.

I need to update that pic with the ACR adapter installed. Dead SeXa. I got my last stamp a few days after my adapter showed up. Timing!
