    Re: 7.62 conversion questions

I'm new to the XCR world so these might be a dumb questions. My rifle hasn't arrived yet.

If I have an XCR 5.56, it sounds like the 7.62 conversion kit comes
with everything I need to convert my rifle (except mags?). It seems like when
I first read about the XCR some time ago, you couldn't go up to 7.62 from a 5.56 rifle.
It this has changed (if it ever really was the case),
how does the 7.62 mag fit into the 5.56 mag opening?
Is it already the right size for a 7.62 mag and has a block in it for 5.56?

    Thanks,

    Jon

C-Product mags are the only 7.62x39 mags available for the XCR AFAIK. They are the same external dimensions as AR 5.56 mags. There were some issues with earlier generations of these mags, but current mags seem to have been reliable.

Don't think that was ever the case.

I think the kits come with 1 mag.

You are talking about 7.62x39 right? 7.62x51 is in the works, with only one picture having been released.

The conversion kit comes with a hammer spring, a shell deflector, a bolt, and a barrel. Everything you need to convert.

It uses AR style 7.62x39 magazines, not AK mags, so it uses the same magazine well as 5.56.

The 7.62x39 round is actually shorter than the 5.56. AR's in 7.62x39 have been around for quite a while. They never caught on probably because of the same issues everyone initially ran into with the XCR, which was the lack of a reliable AR magazine in that caliber.

    Re: 7.62 conversion questions

I'd actually never looked close or had experience with 7.62x39 except
to fire a friend's AK a few times. Didn't really notice the difference in
size of the mags or compare the ammo length.

Anyway, is it true about a 7.62x51 conversion being in the works?
That'd be fantastic. I had a lot of fun with a DPMS .308 AR
and have lot's of .308 reloads sitting around that I'll never get around
to shooting in my hunting rifle.

Not a 7.62x51 conversion, an entirely "new" rifle. For the x51, the magwell has to be lengthened (among other things I am told).

Not a dumb question, its always hard to get up to speed on things.

The 7.62 we are talking about is the 7.62x 39 (used in the AK-47 ). Its small enough to fit in the action and light enough pop to work with the current XCR-L frame (the L stand for Light). Basically the 5.56 and the 7.62x30 are designated intermediate cartridges and those can shoot those in full auto and control it.

The other 7.62 would be 7.62 NATO (.308 in the civvie world). Thats got the go pup of a 30-06, so it takes a heavier frame gun to handle it (that will be the someday XCR-M (M stand for medium). Some lighter infantry weapons in that caliber came in full auto, they were uncontrollable and unusable as such (pod mounted machine guns just fine of course.
