    Mag - Bolt catch issue

This is something I noticed yesterday while shooting the PDW. I'm wondering if this may have been the cause of some otherwise unexplained issues. The bolt catch is hitting the base of the rounds.

You can see in the first close up where it is over the top of the round as the mag is inserted. In the second close up you can see how it can tilt the round up, and in some cases prevents you from releasing the slide with the release. I would think this could potentially cause a feeding issue as well.

This did not occur in 5.56 using a PMag. It did in 6.8 using a Barrett mag, although it wasn't quite as bas as 7.62x39.

It seems counterintuitive that it would not happen with 5.56 since the round is longer, perhaps the 7.62x39 mags need more distance from the back of the mag to the back of the round, it has the room to shift the rounds forward a little.

That is a little strange, I don't think I have seen that before. Does it do it all the time/every mag or just occasionally?

Re: Mag - Bolt catch issue

It will do it on every mag I tried, and I have some 1st gens (with new springs) and a 3rd gen mag. But it usually just hits the round and slips off since the post rotates side to side a little, it doesn't always jack the round up like that. Sometimes it catches on there a little more solidly than others.

I noticed it because I inserted the mag one time and hit the release and I couldn't budge it. I racked the slide and it chambered the round. So I started looking to see what had happened.

Just file it down a tad to where it clears the rounds but still has enought to engage the follower.

If it isn't too much trouble, take off your upper and lets see some pics of what it look like from above the magwell and from the side. This is certainly curiouse, and I would like to find out what's causing this as well.

The base of the round and the catch try to occupy the same space. I'll take some more pics with that disassembled.

Obviously I thought of grinding that down, but I'm hesitant to do that since it works fine as-is with the 5.56 mag. I imagine that's what I'll end up doing anyway though.

it sounds like it could be a number of things...

    - a bad mag catch that holds the mag up too high (most likely IMO)
    - a bad BHO assembly
    - out of spec mags (I dont think to so tho)

It looks like the tip of the catch is reaching too far into the magazine.

Re: Mag - Bolt catch issue

I compared this directly to my other XCR's and as far as I can tell, it's just that the mag catch has a little bit longer nose on it than the others. I'll just modify it and remove a little bit.

Something to check for if you have a newer one though.

Re: Mag - Bolt catch issue

I have had this experience only with my 10rd Cmag. None of my others. I thought about the filing thingy, but my 10rd mag is not my follow-up mag. I only use it as my primary mag while transporting the rifle in a case.

Because of this, I believe it is mag dependent.
