It's a very, very thin walled honeycomb of aluminum that fits over the objective of a scope to eliminate any reflection. It works, although it does reduce the amount of light coming into the scope somewhat.

You're looking through the honeycomb edge on, and it has a little depth so light can't reflect off the lens at an angle.

Here's a little trick I learned from a Team guy in Germany...

He took his front flip cap and cut a circle into it. He then shaved a bit off the bottom of his Killflash and screwed it into the flip cap. I believe he may have superglued it to get it to stay but now he can open and close it at will.

That's a good trick. So when the light started to fade he could just flip the killflash up and get the full brightness from his scope.

For most people, it is a device that helps them feel super-duper-tactical. ;D

an extention tube for the front lens performs much the same except you dont pay the price in optical brightness loss.

they are made for people who like to shoot directly into the sun at a 2-way range with target directly below the sun.

I use a killflash on my work-rifle because it's a way of giving the front lense some protection from scratches without using a cap or cover. This way, when I'm working I don't have to worry about flipping any caps up if I have to jump out of the car with it.

    Killflash/ARD

A killflash or ARD (Anti-Reflective Device) is a honeycomb grid that is placed over the objective of a rifle scope to reduce glint off of the front element to better conceal the sniper's position. The Leupold Mk 4 I had on my M24 SWS had one and it did not take me long to remove it. That lens was so well coated that there was very little reflection off of the front element and with the 3" sunshade that was on it, it really wasn't necessary. Plus it cuts the light coming into the scope by about a third. Pretty much all of the rest of the B-4's in my unit took theirs off as well.

In the civilian world I don't see much use for them, unless some GI Joe wannabe wants to look all tactical, which is stupid. If you want to impress me, show me sub moa, preferably 1/2 MOA groups.
