Marlin lever-action 1894 in 44mag might be a good choice too -- high cap, good accuracy, quick on the follow-up shot, packs a punch, easy to carry.
This is a serious question that's sure to stir up some debate...
How many of you XCR owners out there would pick your rifle as your "go to war gun"?
I gotta be honest, I've had more than a handful of problems with my XCR and that makes me hesitant to say I would pick this weapon as my go to war gun. Today if I were to go to war I might just grab my Remington 700, over my XCR.
Lets here from both sides on this, the die hards and the doubters.

I am more then happy to take my XCR to war. I have the new lower, new gas block with the old trigger. The rifle is way more accurate then myself... No major problems had a few issues with Wolf ammo when my XCR was new but now it eats any ammo I feed it. I would prefer to bring my XCR over any AR if I had to go back to Afghanistan.

Depends on what you're doing.....bring the proper tool for the job.
Sniper role: take your 700.
Frankly, political assassination is a pretty effective, surgical way to engage in revolt.![]()
Now, if you're talking "war" as in societal collapse and hordes of looters and zombies.....AK or XCR all the way for me personally. In that sort of scenario....you may find that a smaller, more concealable SBR or even a pistol has a lot more use.
As for being part of the US armed forces going to war....probably have to stick with whatever Uncle Sam is issuing just for logistical and compatibility reasons. Would I take an XCR if the USG was supporting it over something else, yep....but that's just me. Not everyone will agree. This is one of those "opinions are like assholes" questions.

I'd feel comfortable with the XCR in a SHTF situation. My only point of concern is the charging handle. Other than that excellent rifle that I will definitely purchase again to replace the one I sold.
See you on the bounce
I agree with this part and Soap's comment. AK or XCR all the way. Both are reliable and have more pros than cons. I would pick up the XCR first over my Saiga, but both are awesome weapons.
A smaller SBR for close quarters, I would go for a Kriss personally with a Glock 21C (both I hope to get in March) so the mags are interchangable and use the same ammo.

I would not take a new/untested XCR into any pressure situation period. But one that has been broken in and is know to run well, with a bag of spare parts, it would be my first choice.
Riding, Shooting, or Golfing...you pick and I will be there.
No, not unless I can get parts to maintain it in theatre. Now if the supply channel existed then that would be a different matter. So the answer is yes it has the potential to do it, but as it exists today, no.
Is it viable for personal defence in a civil unrest situation, yes.
