for the xcr-l I noticed there's no heavy 11" barrel version but the light version looks as thick as the 14.7" heavy and 16" heavy. would my xcr be lighter up front, if I swap my 11" barrel for a 14.7" light one?
If you're talking about the pics on the website, it's hard to tell but the light profile portion is going to be in the handguard. RA probably doesn't think it's worth the effort to lighten the portion between the block and shoulder.
You've got a heavy 11" and want to know if it's heavier than a 14.7 light?
I have a light 11" cause there is only a light option for 11"
but
it looks like its just called light even though the profile looks similar to the 14.7 heavy.
so yeah im curious if my 11" light is heavier then a 14.7" light
im just trying to look for different ways to lighten my xcr up front.
I wish the xcr-l had an option for slim handguards like ar15s, where there's only pic rail at the very front of the handguard
Read my post again. The "light" portion is under the handguard. Adding another 3.7" to the front of the gun to save the fraction of ounces that RA didn't take down between the gas block and the shoulder isn't going to be any lighter. I have a 11" light profile. It's got the same contour as my 16" light, UNDERNEATH the handguard.
RA offered some custom handguard options awhile back. Shaved, 5(ish) slots on just the front at the 3,6,9. To my knowledge they've never offered a not continuous top rail. If you want the lightest option from the factory Keymod is the way to go. The minimal amount of weight savings to shave the top rail isn't going to be worth the time/effort and loss of functionality(my opinion). If you really want a lighter 11" upper, go with the mini upper and gas system. Or take the final leap and get the micro upper and just deal with the exposed gas tube on an 11"
One thing I'll note is that it does seem that when you order a bbl shorter than 12" for most RA products, it's not really "light" profile. It's pretty heavy. I have a feeling that is by design as it's going to see a LOT of heat build up from such short length with rifle calibers.
One could test the theory by sending one such 11" bbl to ADCO and have them turn it down to your specification. Then report back. My guess is accuracy will suffer badly once hot and vertical stringing may be the real issue for RA only offering these "light" profile shorties in heavier profiles.
