That is pretty much what all lightning looks like... You just can't see it...

What you see coming down from the top is plasma streamers that are being generated. Not entirely sure of the process but I think it's the nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere being ionized. The plasma "grows" down toward the ground until it touches the ground. Plasma is conductive, so once it does, the two opposite charges can neutralize each other.... I.e. Lightning!

I'd say this is a very high speed camera used to capture what we normally just perceive as a lightning bolt!
Yep, that's pretty much it. Similar streamer will go up into the air from objects on the ground. Whichever streamer completes the connection with the ones coming down first will be the object hit by the lightning, which is why it's never a good idea to be the tallest object around you in a lightning storm.

What you can see clearly here is that the actual 'lightning' travels from the ground up. The ionization has a negative charge, so the earth sends positive back. Very cool.

Look at the top, right before the big discharge. It looks like it's shorting itself out in a loop or going cloud to cloud or something.
