Maybe this can renew interest in a 6.5 project :D

I was surfing through Barfcom and came across a post about a 6.5 wildcat that uses .223 casings and the original .223 bolt. The only thing that needs to be changed out is the barrel. It sounds like this is the sort of thing the XCR was made for. The velocity and balistics look like they should be comparable to the Grendel, at least on paper. Of course, there needs to be more testing, but take a look anyway:

I love anything in 6.5..... but it's a powder and bullet depth seating thing. I do like my 6x45, but to be perfectly honest I think it is limited to the 85gr bullets and less. The AR platform (magazines) limit what the weapon can handle. Of course some knowledgeable person could take the .284 Winchester case and cut it down for a AR rifle, in 6.5, to get more powder to work with. Any takers on that idea???

You might want to read the entire thread. They are using different grain bullets. The 123gr Scenar was what caught my eye originally...

WILL ROBINSON ARMS FINALLY COME OUT WITH THE 6.5? WILL IT BE THIS YEAR? ALOT OF THE BUSHMASTER ACR PEOPLE ARE LOOKING HARD AT THE R/A XCR AGAIN...NOW THAT THE BUSHMASTER ACR AK VERSION WIL USE PROPRIETARY AR MAGS FOR THE 7.62X39. ALOT OF THE HARDCORE ACR GUYS ARE REALLY UPSET ABOUT THIS. I CAN ONLY HOPE ROBINSON ARMS DELIVERS THIS YEAR WITH THE 7.62X51 AND THE 6.5. IT WOULD BE GREAT TIMING FOR THEM. AS BUSHMASTER FALLS FURTHER BEHIND IN THEIR SCHEDULING.

Wait......so Bushmaster is using a proprietary mag or they are using the AR mag for their 7.62 x 39 kit? The XCR uses the AR mags so I don't think there will be much difference.

Friendly reminder: It is very difficult to read a paragraph in all caps.

Bushmaster is using AR mags for the 7.62x39 ACR kit. (thats what they are saying)

I have been doing a bit of reading on the 6.5 Grendell.

It really looks to be a superior offering.

However, it is a patented round and the owner refuses to license just anyone to make it.

You can assume that RA cannot meet the requirements. Or more accurately, would not sell enough to make it worth the quality control required to meet the requirements.

Probably have to just give it up unless RA really gets a much higher quality program going. Hard to do or afford for a small shop. They will put their money elsewhere (and need to)

That was kind of why I was thinking this 6.5 project might foot the bill, but it seems nobody is interested. I will be done with grad school in 2 years, so I will start making inquires then to do a custom barrel for my XCR...

    How bout this...

    http://www.gunworks.co.nz/index.php?itemid=62

7.62x39 necked down to 6.5x39. It retains the standard AK brass taper and you don't have to worry about infringing on Bill Alexander's precious trademark. If Alex could do the barrel and we could find an importer of cheap mil IMI or PRVI brass, we could use the 7.62 bolt and magazines. Barrel swap only.

I found out that the dies are available from CH4D for $82.00.

    What do you think???
