    Las Vegas question

Last time in vegas I took my girlfriend (now wife) with dad to go to Utah (over 12 years ago).

Wife and I have now decided that family trips will be taken twice a year, once with me and the boys, and once with her and the boys (too many animals to take care of at the home for everyone to be gone for extended amounts of time).

Thinking about taking our two 9 year old boys to vegas for a short 3 night stay.

Is there things to do with boys out in vegas?

One boy has never flown, that would be part of the christmas present.

Looking at december 27 time frame (when the boys have off). How is the weather in Nevada at that time? Was thinking about doing what I use to do and perhaps rent a vehicle and just drive and get lost, but with two boys I'd like to have a game plan.

Ideas welcome for that area for that time of year (or would it be a bad idea?).

    Thanks

What are your boys interests / what does the family like to do? How far outside of Vegas are you willing to travel?

On the strip itself, there are shows and sites to see, but not much of that interests me personally. It can be expensive as well.

Touring Hoover Dam and the O'Callaghan-Tillman Bridge is pretty cool.

I personally like to look into museums whenever I travel. I'm a geek I guess. The Museum of Atomic Testing is just off the strip. It would bore most 9-year-olds that I know, but it was something I've always been interested in.

If you like the outdoors, Valley of Fire is about an hour outside Vegas and has some cool short hikes and sites. Depending on how far you are willing to go outside Vegas itself, there are loads of other possibilities (Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Etc.)

I'm with LG....skip the strip itself.....unless that's your thing and you don't mind getting handed fliers for naked hookers, er, I mean "escorts" in front of your kids on the public sidewalk. The weather should be great for outdoor activity if you want to venture off the beaten path....though the mountains will likely be VERY cold with plenty of snow possible (Mt. Charleston/Charleston Peak is almost 12K feet).

Have to laugh, that's what I ALWAYS did when I was single. No problem doing 3000 miles on a rented SUV out of vegas for 14 days. That was usually in May prior to the holiday at the end of the month.

I've only gone into Utah from Vegas. Anything nice outside of Vegas in Nevada and how is the weather. Part of the idea with the trip is to expand the boys horizions on what's "out west". 3 nights isn't that much time (heck, I could spend 2 weeks in Utah every year for 5 years and not see everything I wanted to).

My kid really thought Shark Reef was great, when he was younger.
In all honestly, I can't think of anything else he really got a kick out of while we were in the city.

Of course, he got a kick out of shooting at Desert Sportsmans and the Henderson ranges, but I'm guessing that you're not wanting to do that. Of course, if you wanted to be a hero, you could rent a couple of beltfeds and let them go at it (GRIN).
Do you really think we want laws to be observed? We want them broken. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. When there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be crimes that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants law-abiding citizens? Pass the kind of laws that can’t be observed, enforced, or objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers.

They're spoiled now, they want a can on everything they shoot LOL

Just looking to keep it short and simple. Outside the strip would be fine. Would need to rent a vehicle, and would probably need to ensure of a hotel nearby as I really don't feel like camping for 3 nights (and hauling gear between flights for two boys and myself for the short time). Just never went outside of vegas beacuse when I did, it was straight to Utah.

We went for 5 days back in July with my 6 and 9 year old (11 people total including my parents and brother's family which included a 5, 6 and 9 year old). A very kid heavy trip to say the least. It was a bit warm at that time too! December should be very nice during the day and likely very cool at night. We took a helicopter flight out into the canyon and it was awesome. Landed on a spot overlooking the colorado and got to stay out there for a while (dont bother with the Canyon Skywalk...very rushed and crowded). All 11 of us loved that part of the trip the most! On a previous trip we flew over the canyon/dam in a small plane (it was ok) and did the "damn dam" tour! I dont get into the "shows" but we saw a Cirque de soleil kids show that was awesome!

I second the Atomic Testing Museum, there's a chance your boys will like it, depends on how nerdy they are, I probably would have at their age. Second the helicopter tour idea as well. Expensive sure, but the only real way to take in the vastness of the Grand Canyon. It's something they'd never forget.

How about a trip to Death Valley from Vegas? Also Cirque du Soleil is fantastic regardless of age.

And you don't need to spend cash on a hotel. Just crash at Cartmann's place and have him grill you some steaks.
