New slant on an old SCAM!

Too funny...I just received this email. I wonder why it went to my spam folder?

    ATTENTION Beneficiary!

This is to inform you that your long approved Compensation of US$500,000 ( FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND UNITED STATES DOLLARS) has now been payed through western Union under a special arrangement from the ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL CRIMES COMMISSION OF NIGERIA(EFCC). This is one of her government's numerous efforts to compensate those who were affected by the misconducts of her citizens via the internet thereby discrediting what the country stands for. In her bid to curb this menace, the EFCC has over the years made arrests and investigations which revealed that you have been affected by SCAM, hence we have sent your compensation of US$500,000 through a branch of western union money transfer in London for your immediate pick up.

You are now to contact Det. Usman Abdul of the EFCC via email: [email protected] or call his Phone:+2348035119278 for all details with which to pick up your money at any western union location near you.

You are to forward him your details such as

    1) Full name:
    2) Contact address:
    3) Telephone Number:
    4) A copy of your Identity material either International Passport, Drivers license or work I.d as a valid identification to enable him make verifications from their list to check illegal claims.
    5) SCAMMED VICTIM/REF/PAYMENTS CODE: EFCC/06654/NG $500,000 USD

Note: Before the MTCN to pick up your compensation of US$500,000 will be given to you by Det. Usman, you have to provide him with the details as above to enable him make verifications to avoid illegal and unauthorized claim.

    We remain at your service.

    Regards!

I wish I had some good hacking skills...I'd like to send them a virus. Something like that worm that was sent to Iran would be good.

You could find a site that sets off all the antivirus alarms, then include that URL in your email in a disguised hot link. Say "all my other information is right here on my personal page" and use a disguised visible value like "http://www.bellsouth.net/users/328834bn/index.html".

I used to laugh about these types of e-mails until I had a few run ins with the Nigerian spammer rings when helping some people whose servers were hacked by these people. They are persistent and required the most intense effort to shut down. During the process, I learned why they exist. There were multiple people sending their information. There was one guy in Turkey that had already sent them money and they were trying to lure him to Nigeria to pick up the promised money as they had run into some issues. We sent e-mails to the person with information on how people get robbed and killed when they go.

On a similar note, I always thought that those 2am infomercials were crazy and no one would buy any of that stuff. I once got a consulting gig to fly out and do some setups for a place that processed orders for those things. I was shocked how many orders those people processed. I was hesitant about getting stiffed for payment and it was the gig where I received my money the fastest ever with some extra expense money they threw in beyond the agreed amount.

Apparently there's another one where they con people into acting as a reshipment point for regular consumer goods, they have them repackage it and forward it to Nigeria or wherever. Maybe the person gets like $5-$10 per package for doing this.

The kicker is that the originators are purchasing the goods with stolen CC info. and having the packages shipped to the dupe in the US who then forwards them on. So when the Secret Service comes looking for someone to bust for credit card fraud, they get some idiot here rather than Alcon Ugood in Zimbabwe.
