Okay, you guys here are great especially for the information you give as it is extremely helpful so with this in mind if you had to take just one handgun into a SHTF situation what would it be and why,I am leaning toward my Glock 22,but I shoot my 1911 better.I also really like the G20,10mm, but getting ammo maybe a problem and that has to be considered? Ammo availability is critical so maybe a Glock 21 in 45 acp would be better. I do not know what would be the best overall
what would you guys say?I really like my Kimber 45 but feel my Glock 22 is more reliable.I must say I do not like the 9mm I have a m9 not crazy about the 9mm ,like I stated before I feel the people here are very insightful and I respect all of your opinions and not to mention people here who have had experience in the military. I really listen to and have nothing but tremendous respect for those who served and
keep me and everybody free. And this is not BS I truly respect those who have served,I feel they are step above a guy like me,the reason why is simple you have put your lifes on the line ,I have not,Thank you,Kev
Another vote for the Glock 17 or 19 (in 9mm just because ammo is plentiful and cheaper to stockpile).Remember caliber isn't important if you're out of ammo! The Glock is extremely easy to work on,repair and modify and parts are inexpensive and plentiful. Also magazines are less expensive than most other pistol types, therefore easier to stockpile as well, not to mention factory 33 round magazines are available. They may not be great for concealed carry but it makes a handy reload if the Zombie hoards come knocking!
Glock 22 or 23. I have both and they work great. Here in America I have never had a problem finding 40 S&W. If I were going over seas ..... might switch to the 9 mm versions of those guns.
Have some experience with 1911 and Walther P99. I can shoot the P99 more accurate then the Glock and never had enough experience w/ 1911 to make a decision. Although I like the P99 I have more time and am significantly more comfortable with the Glock. If I had more experience running a P99 I wouldn't mind taking that either. If you have a modern, well designed, and quality(H&K, Glock, Sig Sauer, Walther, M&P, XD.....) handgun and practice with it to a competent confident level I suspect the Glock or whatever your choice is would serve you well.
Because I have one, (and it's NEVER let me down) Sig P226R Elite. I've never had one break. Rust? Oh hell yes I've seen them rust (OTB), and I've had to replace a trigger bar spring, but only because the guy removed his grip panel and lost it while cleaning.
The Glock (9mm) definitely gets my vote as well for simplicity, reliability, and availability of ammo.
Did you just say Tac Sol has FINALLY came out with its .22LR conversion for the G23???
I'm off to their site!
I really like and enjoy my AA .22LR conversion for my G23.....but it's not all that reliable. I've heard the .22 conversions from Tac Sol is MUCH more reliable (though it's also about $100 more and well over half way to a new Glock)....I'd still like to have one.
***EDIT***....I don't see it listed on Tac Sol's sight. Are you sure it's available?
Doesn't really matter which model, though 9mm will likely be the cheapest/easiest to find in the US (in a post apocalyptic world ).
However, during the 2008 gun/ammo run just after the presidential election....40 S&W was easier to find than 9mm or .45, at least from what I witnessed.
I don't care for the 9mm in terms of its performance with ball ammo....but LOVE its precision b/c of the low recoil. I don't carry expensive self-defense ammo, so for me it's a poor carry choice.
I don't care for the recoil of the .40 b/c I feel it's "snappier" than the .45....but I like the smaller size and the extra mag capacity.
I personally think you're fine with your G22. A 23 might be easier to conceal.....if the SHTF, oddly enough, there may very well be times where NOT looking like you're carrying a gun may be highly desirable.
All that said, nothing wrong with a 19 or 17....if I had plenty of money and wasn't trying to standardize pistol calibers......I would DEFINITELY own a 19.
If a shootout is emminent than my Kimber Model 1911, with spare mags, is the gun to go. Few people shot with a .45ACP get up and walk away or want more gunplay.
If it's a carry gun for self protection then my Glock 27 in .40cal. Easy to hide and the .40 is "almost" as effective as the .45ACP.

I wouldn't count on that. I'd take reliability over an assumed difference in effectiveness, it's still a pistol round. I'd probably just use the same pistol I carry, M&P in 9mm. But if I was going to take a .45 it would be my FNP-45 not my Kimber.
Probably be glad to have whatever you can lay your hands on though.
FNP-45,is one that I would like to check out,but I think my next gun will be a G35 this way my mags will work with both my G22 and the G35.I still shoot better with my Kimber.I am surprised to see no one said a BHP,Kev
My old faithful P229 in .40 is my choice. Got 2 of them ('94 and '98). Never had any rust other than the head of a grip screw which was quickly replaced. And I've never had a failure with either of them in my hands. My main one ('94) even worked fine with a broken firing pin. Don't know how long it was broken before I found out.
Yeah, 9mm is plentiful, but so is .40. And if SHTF real bad, I wouldn't be surprised if the military was pulling all NATO ammo off shelves. So no more 5.56 and no more 9mm. Besides, if I did happen across 9mm ammo, I'd bet there'd be a 9mm pistol close by. I'll stick to my best friend of 15 years.
I don't have any full size glocks, but I shoot so well with my G27 I would take that. I'm a big fan of .40, and it's just as plentiful in my neck of the woods as 9mm. It doesn't really fit my hand all that well and it's plain boring to shoot, but it goes bang when I tell it and the bullet goes where I point it. I don't have any reason to believe I'd be more accurate with a bigger one and I have several 29 round mags to stash here and there.
I would love to have a full size "classic" like a CZ75 or a HiPower though. I keep watching those alloy HiPowers go in and out of stock at aimsurplus and am thinking it would be too cool to have a matched pair of them.
Here Here! As much as I love others, I absolutely adore my M&P9. (On my side right now as a matter a fact!) I can't even begin to estimate the number of rounds I've got through this thing, and despite being abused time and time again I've NEVER had any sort of FTF, FTE, nothing... Well, except when I throw in some plastic to practice trb drills. I've NEVER squeezed this thing that it didn't go bang!
it's a tried and true design that has made it through 2 world wars and numerous smaller wars and conflicts. It's still considered the benchmark for todays autos, is fairly simple to work on and parts are plentiful.
plus it's a .45 cal............you can stop a bear with that round.
I think the important part here is to HAVE a reliable handgun of choice within reach if needed. Whatever you are comfortable with, within reason, should do the job. :2cents:
I'm another FNP-45 fan. But my weapon of choice (yeah, i know it says HANDGUN, but...)has been, and always will be a Remington 870 with OO-Buck. Between the two (and perhaps a Rocket-Propelled Chainsaw), the Zombies don't stand a chance...
