    7.62x51 vs .308

I have read many opinions out there regarding being able to run these rounds in different chambered rifles. I trust the opinions here so I thought I would ask.

Can you run 7.62x51 Nato in a .308 chamber?

Can you run .308 Win in a 7.62x51 chamber?

Do the answers you are giving differ from rifle to rifle, in particualr a bolt gun compared to a semi auto rifle?

Lastly if you have any feedback on Venesuelan Cavim 7.62 I would love that as well as I have the opportunity to buy a bunch at a good price, but want to know if I coudl run it in my Savage bolt rifle, or my future XCR-M or other semi auto rifle.

    Thanks,

    Travis

I'm sure we will have a wide range of folks chime in on Go/NoGo gauges, the pressure differences between the two round, possibly a horror story or two someone read on the Internet.

For example there is still a persistent meme that .308 is loaded at a pressure 12,000 psi higher than 7.62 (50,000 v 62,000) the problem is the measurements are taken using different methods AND measuring units, the 7.62 is measured in CUP (Copper Units of Pressure). The actual difference when measured like for like is 60,000 v 62,000 psi.

SAAMI has no issues with them being interchangeable

The reality is that unless you have a match chamber you shouldn't see any difference whatsoever

    HOWEVER, if you reload,

    A. The looser 7.62 chamber will lead to fired brass that is too long for the .308 chamber without full length resizing.

    B. ACTUAL commercial .308 (as opposed to branded as .308) has a slighter larger capacity than 7.62 due the 7.62 requiring slightly thicker brass per military specs. As such you can have hotter loads if you handload for performance....which I wouldn't suggest..ever....

The only thing I know is that the primer in a 7.62NATO is harder than the standard .308. This means that you should not shoot .308 in certain rifles (like the M1A/M14) because they have floating firing pins that may cause slam-fire on the soft primer.

Some folks don't like you over there Mr C...... ;D

I particularly enjoyed the couple of muppet comments by some of your protagonists trying to shift the dioscussion from how the 7.62 and .308 CARTRIDGE differ to how the CHAMBER MAY be different. When that didn't work they then started comparing Ishapore made rifles (one half step up in manufacturing from a Somali made AK-47) with current rifles and how a case head seperation = KABOOM...... :duh:

EC: Thanks for the link. Interesting discussion -- I take away three points from all of that: (1) there's not really a rat's ass worth of a difference between the two cartridges, but rifles chambered for 7.62 NATO will probably be a bit looser; (2) you know the subject matter; and (3) you really enjoy getting a reaction from folks!

everalm: Since you're posting again, I'm still curious as to your source of information in this thread:

Again, not suggesting you're making this up, but you came down pretty hard on the OP without backing up your claims.

    Nomad,

I bought a case of 1000 in the mid '90s. I don't recall the production date. Shoots fine in my M1A. I have also reloaded it. I still have a bunch of it in the plastic 100 round packs. Shoot good, last long time GI. ;D

I haven't bought any recently, but based on past experience, I would buy it again if the price was good.
