Mid length gas system for 16" 1/7 barrel

I built a new rifle this week using a mid length gas system.

I have read that the mid length reduces recoil.

I am here to report that after firing 100 rounds of 68 OTM through the rifle that this statement is true.

I also noticed how much cooler the handguard and bolt were after shooting. Not sure if the mid length keeps the bolt cooler, but that was my observation.

The 1/7 barrel loved the 68 grain OTM. Great accuracy and the mildest recoil of any AR rifle I have shot.

I would definitely concur with those statements with carbine vs midlength, having had a similar experience. However, my question is what about rifle length vs midlength gas system; just curious really.

Rifle is even more reliable and softer shooting (provided you have a 20" bbl).

    All true IMHE/IMHO

Don't just take my word for it. Mess with lots of these things over a long period of time. Lurk the AR forums and search for references to reliability and to broken bolts. Pay attention to sub references to the gas system length.

I will bet a six pack or your favorite beer that the conclusion you come to is,
    (a) rifle length is most durable and reliable of the Stoner D.I. types.
    (b) carbine length is least reliable of the Stoner D.I. types.

M4 feed ramps, stiffer mag springs, stiffer extractor springs, tougher extractor buffers and the extractor O ring devised by Crane Naval weapons center were all crutches or fixes for the M4/M855 combo.

On the web I can find only one instance of broken bolt in a mid length and that was "filthy fourteen". A neglected and abused carbine class loaner gun.

The longer the gas system the lower the operating pressure and slower the bolt unlock. This results in lower felt recoil and increased reliability.

I love working on projects and optimizing my weapon systems just for fun. With that in mind, just exactly how much better would the possible alternatives be over my current set up in my applications (both listed below). Is it even worth bothering and will the difference be noticeable enough to put the time/ money/ effort into it? I really like my current set up, but if it can be improved.. why not? ;D

    Application: 3 Gun/ SPR w/ 1-6 scope. Engagement 0-500yds.

    Current set up:

    18in Mid-Length

Possible Alternatives (which one is better and by how much?):
    18in Rifle-Length
    20in Rifle-Length
