Agreed....I doubt any new round will even happen. Likely it will be 5.56 or .308 as the only choices.

I'd agree on that. The army already has a logistics chain that cN handle 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 so I'd be very surprised if they deviated to an entirely new caliber. With ballistics technology. Ow they can improve the effectiveness of. Other and then chose which one to carry based on mission parameters.

Sounds like a new scheme to poorly spend more of my stolen money.

Or, given the small numbers a test to prove that what they already have is leading edge and thus doesn't need replacing.

The US Army seems to be banking on its yet-undescribed XM1158 ADVAP round to bridge this gap – however Chief Milley himself admitted in testimony to Congress that the ADVAP’s design could be applied to either 7.62mm or 5.56mm ammunition.[...]

The M4 is not the A4. The M4 has a 14.5" barrel, while the A4 has a 20" barrel. I suspect the shorter barrel does not bring the armor piercing round up to a velocity that would pierce armor. Maybe the 7.62mm can reach a high enough velocity in a 14.5" barrel?

Sounds like a Sabot round to me.

Why do the troops that typically carry the M4 need a more powerful firearm?

Are they thinking about replacing the M4 across the board, or is this to be used in only special cases (240 a gunners, tankers, airborne)?
