    M96 Recon Carbines....

    M96 Expeditionary Rifle (Updated 25 Feb 2009)

We are considering making just over 100 M96 Recon Carbines beginning in March 2009. This will be the last of the M96s made. Do not trouble our sales staff with questions concerning this. They will be sold over the web only. More details near the end of March 2009.

If a new Recon with all updates were available today... I would purchase one in a heart beat. Make the Bren kit available... and seal the deal.

If ROBARMS could pre-sell the 100 Recon Carbines... would that move this project forward from consideration to production? If so, put me down for one...

    Anyone else?

My name has been on the list for awhile now.

Terra, how many are on the list? Can you tell?

The M96 club is a very cool one. The more members, the better.

I scored mine used locally a couple of months back. After shooting Terra's OD test mule M96, I had to have one.

What's the deal with having the mag on top?
    Feeding?

The Bren kit allows you to shoot comfortably from the prone position with a 30 round magazine... gravity feed for the magazine is just a bonus...

    I see. That makes sense.

Neither one of those reasons has much validity. When firing from the bipod-supported position, the M96 Bren is just as high off the ground as the bottom mag configuration. (Compare the photos above.)

Gravity assistance doesn't really matter except for weapons with springless box mags, like the M1875 Gatling gun. Modern magazines with springs feed their cartridges just fine against gravity.

The real advantage with the Bren configuration is when in military use as a squad automatic weapon. When operated by a two-man crew, a top mag can be changed significantly faster than a bottom mag, thereby minimizing lulls in firing.

Try firing a Recon with and without the bren kit from the prone... or bench... with a 30 round mag. The advantage of the bren kit will become obvious.
