Latest Configuration of My Spikes Tactical SBR .22LR

Originally it started as a 16" Spikes upper with the Lothar Walther bbl. I had it cut down to 13" and then I had a POF predator rail installed and along with a fake can and a set of HK Diopter sights with a TNVC RDS red dot.

The rifle sorta looked like this (minus the red dot pictured here and the lack of sights) I still have the ACE M4 SOCOM stock....just haven't put it back on since I swapped out to the Vltor.

    Ignore the MP5.

Here's what it looks like now after not being able to get a good sight picture with the diopters and putting on Troy Stubbies and a Vltor I had laying around as well as taking the YHM free float rail that came with the Spikes upper and cutting it down about 3/4" or so.

And with my 16" XCRs Leupold 1.5-5x20 VX-III and GG&G low 30mm mount:

Thought of getting one but...well another story, probably better left unsaid.
Accuracy is very good.....reliability....very bad. It is very odd, some days it runs very well, others....it's a jam-o-matic.

If you're looking for good accuracy and great reliability....I'd go with the S&W M&P 15-22 with the Gen 2 mags. My wife just got one (they run about $400 from Botach with the flash hider equipped bbl) and 5 gen 2 mags and it has only had one jam in about 20 mags so far.

Where did you get the Gen 2 mag's from and how much ?

    Was it also Botach ?
I'm getting the Gen 2's from 44mag.com for $17 each.

Botach had basically the same price (or close to it) but they were out of stock at the time.

Perfect for me....now you know why I had to build custom risers for my XCRs. Apparently, my face is alot like Skelator's.

AR sights are a little too high for me....the Troy stubbies are perfect for my face and the Vltor gives a great flat place for my ugly mug.

No one seems to know....but the Gen 2 mags have "25 rounds" written on them and they work better.

I'm suprised by your poor reliability. My spikes .22 dedicated upper has been great. I'll get 1-2 failures about every 500 rounds. I clean it at about the 500 round mark as the powder residue has built up enought to cause feeding problems at that point. Other than that, I rarely have a jam, failure to extract or eject.

What ammo are you using? I only use the Federal Bulk pack as recommended by spikes.

    Same here....Federal bulk pack.

Even when Spikes had "tuned" it from the factory with the 16" bbl (prior to me cutting it down to 13")....it still had a few failures per couple hundred rounds....not bad, but not great either.

I know one of the recent problems I had was how the rails "spread" apart on the carrier for disassembly. You can easily bend the rails to make them too loose or too tight. If they are too tight or out of close alignment, it will cause jamming issues. I had this problem the time before last when I went to the range. I was averaging about 1 jam per mag. When the rails are aligned properly, I think the problem may lie in the fact that if the spent casing doesn't eject straight out of the ejection port and instead goes up into the cavity where an AR houses the charging handle, it may hinder the speed of extraction causing the jam in the first place. The S&W M&P 15-22 doesn't have this cavity and seems to run more reliably at least in part b/c of it.

Same thing with mine. Runs smooth as silk with Federal Bulk pack and the red bulk boxes of Winchester marked 333 or 555.

But I would like to have a Lothar barrel instead. Anything more accurate than my set up now would be outrageous. I have some people I know with the S&W and they like them. I checked one out in the range and it looks and shoots good.
