Anybody own/know someone who owns Dragon Skin body armor?

I've been thinking of picking up a level III tac vest for a security contractor position and/or SHTF breakdown in society where I'd need multi-hit rifle defeating armor protecting my ass.

Anybody have firsthand experience wearing this stuff or know somebody reliable who has? Is it really lighter, more comfortable, and flexible compared to the ceramic plate? Any other misc info would be helpful as well.

I've seen what it supposedly can do on Futureweapons and several other independent tests, though the army has disputed the claims over and over. All I know is I don't trust the bureaucrats, pencil pushers, and ticket-punching officers who said it doesn't measure up to the wonderful Interceptor vest. The same body armor that probably caused hundreds of casualties and was subsequently recalled en mass due to rounds penetrating which should've been stopped cold.

    Thanks!

I was considering buying a Dragon Skin vest as well. I would like to hear info too.

I'll try and dig up the link, I looked into it a while back and when I did there was a problem with the adhesive @ high temp losing integrity resulting in a bullet proof belt once the scales had all slid to the bottom of the vest. There was also a problem with diesel breaking it down as well. I'll be back in the morning to find some links or correct myself.

I can say that when this stuff started showing up, the guys here were starting to ask questions and showing a lot of interests. There was testing done and our command said a big HELL NO to it. I cannot remember the specifics of the testing, only that the Team guys were forbidden (i.e. SGLI goes bye bye if you take a hit wearing it) from wearing it in combat.

I did some research on dragonscale a while back and remember it was flexible and light, but its largest drawback was that once a bullet hit a location, that 1.5-2 Sq.Inch section no longer had any protection.

Seemed great if you might take a bullet or two (although not two in the same place) only. I would not want to bring that to a war zone, as one hit, and you would need to replace the vest, which may not be available.

Great for casual civilian use though...

No, you can't buy dragon-skin. You can buy level IV stand alone plates or a level III vest and plates to bring it to level IV (much more expensive) through www.bulletproofme.com.

As I recall, Dragon Skin got lots of press from Future Weapons (or a show like it).....but the actual testing after all the hype was that it didn't work as advertised.

Of course, this may just be that the army didn't want to re-outfit everyone.

Dragon skins works well but is suseptible to excessive heat and salt water damage. That was why it failed Army tests. For most civilian uses it is pretty damned good and can take way more hits than other flexible vests due to the lack of binding on bullet impact.

Most vests are throw away post impact anyway. Also most steel plates can't take multiple hits in the same location and as a downside are heavy. Multiple hits are also an isuse for fixed ceramic plates. In this respect Dragon skin is beter as it can take a burst and stay intact.

Being susceptible to salt water damage I wonder how it fares with daily wear and being soaked with sweat at times?

I think a while back we were discussing this and someone mentioned that it was also vulnerable to bullets burrowing up in-between the plates if you were shot at a low angle.

ok, so I emailed the sales dept. @ Pinnacle and the Prez himself Mr. Murray Neal sent me these independent test results.

lol so it looks like the army outright lied about them being vulnerable to the high temps and angled shots (or the problems were corrected). not to mention they used something totally unlike a human body when they used hard clay to back the Dragon Skin panels they tested lol. MAN that 5 shots with a .30-.06 at different angles being stopped dead is pretty impressive imo.

I tend to trust the small businessman over the govt, military high command, or DoD, unfortunately...

oh and fyi Pinnacle won the contract and outfitted the entire Shithook fleet with ballistic armor to protect the crew in the event of a turbine explosion.
