    Billet AR Upper

Guys, I'm looking for some advice.

I want to build a new 6.5 AR and am looking to use a billet upper as the extra thickness walls make the upper receiver stiffer and hopefully will make the rifle more accurate. Does anyone have experience here and advice to offer as to which brand/product to consider?

    Thanks,

I have a VLTOR MUR-1, actually I have 2 of them, with and without forward assist. I ordered them from Brownells, good price and a real nice upper. Looks real good mounted on my POF lower.

Sun Devil makes one and they have always had a good product that is reasonably priced. Spikes makes one as well but I think they are asking a little more.

I'm partial to Mega Machine. I've built three of their forged upper and lower recivers and one billet set. They now have an ambi-bolt release billet lower and matched upper. I have enough AR's for now, but the Ambi would be nice. I am very happy with the quality of Mega Machine. In the Group Buy section of Snipers Hide there is a vendor with one Ambi-Billet set left.

If the barrel is not touching, then I don't think the extra stiffness will help you one bit. Though I will say, stiffer usually means heavier, and if it is a prone shooter, the heavier the better as it provides you a more stable platform.

What do you mean? The barrel attaches to the upper, of course it's going to be touching.

Talking about the barrel touching the handguards, changing the harmonics of the barrel, causing POI shift.

Touching the receiver should not matter, once it's tighten it has consistent contact, keepin the harmonics the same. Not just that, but it touches the barrel at the end where it chambers, and not in the middle at a point where the bullet passes through.

A hot barrel, and the hotter it gets will also cause more shifts.

Good choice. I'm working on putting together a Vltor VIS upper assembly with a POF lower!

On my 6.5 Grendels (three of them) I chose Alexander Arms........ who better than the guy that invented the cartridge? I also bought Alexander barrels and bolts to go with them. I might have spent a little more but if I have a problem I can go to the source. :2cents:

I don't know if it helps, but it surely shouldn't hurt to have a more rigid upper.

I was thinking the same thing.

    100-200 yards - No Effect?
200+ yards - Maybe it Helps?
