Good point to on the sight length for iron sights. Without a gas block mounted front sight the sight plane would be very short leading to limited accuracy for BUIS.

It wouldn't be worse than any other mini... I just think in this case even beyond others, a gas block mounted front sight would really be the best.
Note the production vent cuts on that upper as well.![]()
I'd mount a 12" regular barrel to a Mini if I had to and not think much it, but the extra barrel doesn't seem right. Aesthetics wise, meh, but it would still function and work as intended and that's all that matters. Exposed gas cylinder is an issue I'd think too, the AK argument is a good one, but one of those things I say, "If you can protect it, then why not?"
I'd be happy with the 10" PDW I ordered.
When have any of our plans ever actually worked? We plan, we get there, all hell breaks loose.
I've been thinking about and have asked to be able to order this configuration for just about a month after the PDW came out,so I feel violated...lol.Anyway the AK has been like this for 60+ years with little or no problems. The weight balance has to be a HUGE benefit in handling.I also agree about the gas block mounted front sight, either dovetail or small picatinny rail, either would work.Aesthetics...I personally don't mind it.All I can say is if you don't like it ....don't get one.My initial reaction is that it is more susceptible to damage, but... An AK has a very similar gas block/piston/gas tube setup, and that is more exposed than it is on this rifle.
The best ergonomic improvement I believe can be made to the XCR is to move the center of gravity rearward, and this would help with that.
I don't know. If I get a Mini, I would maybe think about it.
That setup *really* needs a gas block mounted front sight.

Here is an idea of what the Micro upper would look like with a full length Op Rod and both a 11" and 16" barrel.
Me, I prefer without the Op Rod sticking out, at least with the Micro (though a 9" barrel might not be bad). It does however, make this 16" HBAR 6.8 barrel feel a little better when handling.
