I wondered the same thing and ran the specs of each through a ballistic calculator. Both were assumed to have a 50 yard zero which is what I use.

At 100 yards the 7.62 was 1.14 inches high (1142 ft lbs) and the 6.8 1.44 inches (1217 ft lbs). At 200 the 7.62 was 3.1 inches low (897 ft lbs) and the 6.8 was 1.17 inches low (962ft lbs). At 300 yards the 7.62 was 18 inches low (697 ft lbs) and the 6.8 was 12.66 inches low (754 ft lbs). I only ran the numbers to 300 yards as this is the distance I felt either cartridge would fit my needs. I have a .308 DPMS for farther than this.

Both are fairly close and if I plan to shoot either a lot, I would go with the 7.62. If I don't plan to shoot much, then the 6.8 is better ballistically and would be much easier for me to get approved at work.

Factor in 6.5 to the conversation and I still haven't made a choice. I really want a conversion by the end of the year but have to define mine needs before I can decide. I really think the 6.5 may be the best choice as it has the best ballistics, wolf ammo for more affordable shooting, and pretty much equals the .308 out to 500 yards which is the max I could see for deer hunting around here. For work it will easily do everything that the .308 would do.

The best for me would probably be to get rid of my .308 and by a second XCR in 6.5. I would have the exact same manual of arms and a precision rig in a smaller package with less recoil.
