Decisions! Decisions! Decisions! Clubster (at Sigforum) has my XCR. I just mailed him the check and expect to get the rifle within a week. So, now I have to decide about BUIS, optics, VFG, rail covers, etc. After reading through all 29 pages (whew) of the Sigforum thread to see what others are getting and advised, I’ve developed a tentative list, but also have some questions.

- BUIS: I’m leaning toward Troy (A4 or M4?), even though they’re more expensive than MI and YHM. Any dissenters?
- Optics : Definitely Eotech, but which one? Most here have the 512. For another $70 one can get the 522. Is the 522 worth the extra $?
- Rail Covers : Probably Magpul, or should I go with TangoDown? How many?
- Should I also get some of the “ladder” type. What for? How many?
- VFG : Should I want one? If so, I’m leaning toward the TangDown.
- Pistol Grip : MIAD, TD BattleGrip, Hogue? I have Hogues on all my pistols and like them.
- Magazines : Magpul PMAGs

Anything else?

I’ve checked several places on-line and prices are pretty consistent. I’m thinking of buying from Bravo Company USA because it’s the only place I’ve found that has everything I’ve mentioned. It seems easier to get it all from one place. Should I look elsewhere?

I’m posting this on both Sigforum and the new XCR forum.
Thanks for any and all advice.

BUIS: Troy's are great even though I haven't used mine yet (have an ACOG)
OPTICS: Have the 512 on another gun and work well ~ not sure if the 522 is brand new or an old item ~ saw that it had an outer Reticle and was actually cheaper than the 512.
RAIL COVERS: I use both Magpul ladder and XT ~ the XT's fit very well.
VFG: Tango Down is as good as the rest. I have one but I put one from SOG Armory that has a rubber outer layer that is very comfortable so I haven't changed yet. I would put the TD on if I had a tac Light with a grip switch though.
PISTOL GRIP: Have the Hogue also have an unused Ergo ~ personally I like the feel and comfort of rubber over plastic.
MAGS: PMag all the way.

Your on the right track!

Great. Thanks.
What part of Houston do you live in? I'm in Katy but belong to and shoot at PSC in Friendswood.
Did you notice on Sigforum that wolvdog229 is trying to get a Houston shoot going. Not much response. It's great talking to people on the Internet, but actually meeting them raises things to a new level.

magazines- H&K are rock solid as are GI mags with magpul followers. I havent tested the Pmags enough to reccomend a total switch over to them. they look solid, but have some GI mags as frontline SHTF and keep the PMags as practice and testing unitl you feel they are solid.

rail covers- skip the ladder type they will tear up your hand while extended shooting. get some with as smooth a surface as you can. 3 full panels to cover where you put your hand.

forward grip- why the heck would anyone ever want a forward grip on a gun with a prominent magwell? just hold on to that and stop adding useless extra weight to your gun.
that said, if you need a BIPOD, then the Grip Pod should be it. at 7oz it is the lightest bipod you can get and id good gear. take it off when you dont need it, it takes about 10 seconds to mount/dismount. I keep it in my gear bag NOT on the gun

Pistol grip- the rubberized ERGO grip is decent gear but may need the little knob that hits at the second knuckle of your middle finger on your firing hand, sanded or cut down. it does wear into your finger after a day of shooting. its an easy mod and should not count agains the ERGO

optics- the Aimpoint has a really long 3 year continuous battery life which is really cool. Leupold makes a great MR/T 1.5-5x22 scope perfect for a rifle. As to the eotech, the only reson to go with the expensive unit in my mind would be for one of the following reasons
-nightvision capabilities
-battery standardization (AA or cr123)
-better "roll cage"
-different reticle
otherwise go with the cheapest one!! :p eotech rocks

BUIS- dunno i need some myself

I live in Denver but have shot numerous matches at PSC while in Houston on business trips. I was introduced to it by a friend at NASA JSC who's a member and SO there. Hopefully I'll have more buisness trips there in the next year and a half to shoot some more IDPA.

This pic shows both the magpul and ladder style rail covers as well as Troy BUIS, Hogue grips, and a Tango Down VFG on the XCR.

A lot of this will come down to personal preference.

Still...

The Troy BUIS are very good. I prefer a bit more adjustability, so I went a different route. You don't really need it though, so the Troy's would get the nod then. I also like the Samson front sight quite a bit.

Optics. I use an Aimpoint, so I can't comment too much on Eothingums. From all I've seen, the AA battery versions seem to get the nod for battery life. The adjustments on the new 557 seem more magnifier friendly than the older units, if that matters to you.

Rail covers. I use Knight's. Those are my personal favorites. The Tango Downs are pretty good as well. They'd be my second choice after the KAC covers. There is no third choice and I don't care too much for the ladder covers. Rails get hot, and the ladder types aren't nearly as much protection as full rail covers.

VFG. Dunno here. I like the XCR fine without, but I'm used to a vertical grip on my AUG. I'll probably try one out. I'm leaning towards the BOBRO. This isn't anything close to a priority and is probably dead last on the XCR "need to buy" list.

Grip. MIAD. I like the HK grip and this is the closest I can find. I'm quite pleased with it. Really, the stock AR grip is perfectly acceptable, but I like the backstrap filler on the MIAD. Like I said, it feels like an HK and the HK91 is an old friend.

Magazines. Pmags. Simply great so far. Very similar to AUG mags and those I've used for many years without incident. HK mags look to be good stuff, but I can contain my enthusiasm for them because of cost. If Magpul hadn't put the Pmags out this year, I'd be buying (and cursing the cost) of the HK mags.

Vendors. I bought most of my stuff from Operation Parts and SKD. I think you'll find they're all pretty similar, though. I chose those two mainly because I could get everything I wanted from them at the least amount of shipping cost.

The image pretty much answers all your questions I think.

YHM BUIS have served me well and I see no reason to really upgrade to something "better"

I like the EOtech and Eotech 3x Magnifier combo. It's like having an ACOG with CQB functionality

I like TD rail covers. I may convert to KAC down the road. Not sure. The TD panels are good stuff

I use a GGG VFG. Be sure to make sure whatever you choose will stay on the XCR's weight saving cut rail

I am using a MIAD. I tried the TD at first. Too slim

PMAGs have been fine. Havent really tested them in carbine class, but they work at the range just fine

Decision:

- BUIS: Troy
- Optics : Eotech 512. Per Tzoid's recommendation, I have emailed [email protected]
- Rail Covers : Magpul (3) - no ladder type for now
- VFG : Holding off for now
- Pistol Grip : Hogue. I have Hogues on all my pistols and like them.
- Magazines : Magpul PMAGs (4)
- Magpuls: 3 pack

I'm getting the Hogues at a local store (easy to return if I don't like them) and possibly the Eotech from ted...
Everything else I've ordered from bravocompanyusa.com -- Mike Clubb (from whom I'm buying the XCR) recommended them.

I still need to get a case, too. I've seen lots of recommendations on Sigforum so will explore them.

Good choice(s).

One more thing ~ if you are going with (3) Magpul XT covers ~ you might grab one extra.
Since the cover does not cover the full rail you will have some exposed areas. The extra one could be cut to fill in the balance. It is easy to cut and applies well.

I used the ladder for the top but YMMV.

I ordered my MAGPULs from there as well a Vickers sling. Everything arrived quickly and was well packaged. No complaints.

I'm sorry, I was having a brain F__T. I really like the Urban ERT as the webbing so so much wider, and it is adaptable between a one and two point sling. It also has the bungie strap which makes it more comfortable.

I have both the Vickers sling andthe Urban ERT. They are both great but if I'm expected to perform extended carry with my patrol rifle, I will opt for the Urban ERT as the shoulder strap is 2" wide and very reasonably priced. Check out their Single point Sling that you can convert to a two pointer with the addition of another strap: http://www.urbanertslings.com/single-point.html

Be Safe!
