Guys, I would like for you to be careful when buying used rifles. Twice now I have spoken to customers who bought used XCRs that were trashed and sold as "good condition". Basically, these rifles were in need of the upgrades in the early XCRs, and the customers failed to take care of the problem. We have signed certified letters from sending upgrade notices to these people (several times!) and were repeatedly ignored despite our best efforts.

So please, be careful when buying a used XCR. Contact me with the serial number, and I can tell you if the rifle needs anything or has had upgrades completed if it did need them. That last thing I want is for you to invest a ton of money into a rifle, only to have to turn around and send it back to us for a complete overhaul. Nobody wants to be ripped off, and unfortunately, the world is not nearly as full of good people as it should be.

Just make sure you contact me before buying used rifles - Most of the time, I probably know the seller on a first name basis... But like I said, not everyone is trustworthy, and I just want to keep you all happy and your rifles in 100% condition.

These upgrades do not apply to rifles with the new style bolts and gas systems. If the serial number is higher than XL00700+, the upgrades are not needed. There is a list on the website of rifles potentially needing the upgrades. All owners have been contacted - but many choose to ignore us.

Thanks for the heads up Terra. I can't help but wonder how many of the owners are customers that bought them at a gunshow or from a dealer that ordered a few in and the dealer ins't taking care of the customer letting them know about the upgrades. Maybe just stock sitting on somebodys shelf.

Terra,

My SN is XL01XXX (purchased new from Jensen in 1/07) so it's not on the list but came with the old style bolt and firing pin. Is the firing pin issue on the early XCR merely that it has the old style bolt and pin or was it some other issue resolved on later old style bolts and firing pin?

Carl
what are the differences between old and new style bolts?
scroll down on the trading post side and look at the "used parts" thread, Terra posted some sketches. IIRC, the upgrade to the firing pin will help keep it from breaking.
old style bolts have the firing pins with the cylindrical heads, while the new ones look almost like a top hat.

Having an old style bolt does not necessarily mean they need upgrades. Your serial number is far too high to be on the upgrade list, carl. :)

Thanks, that's what I thought but wasn't sure. I alerted Allison you'd have the used, new style bolt and some firing pin parts to throw into the shipment of my 6.8 kit.
is there a change to the bolt or are you strictly talking about the firing pins?
The upgrade is done to the firing pin, but the old firing pins + old bolts are not interchangeable with new firing pins + new bolts.
*bump* someone pin this, please?
I think the new firing pins look more like a thumb tack, with a really long needle. ;D
