I need some help picking a new gun...

I've been milling over this since SHOT. I want a 6.8 SPC. I don't know why, I just do. Here's the dilemma. Do I get a LWRC 8" upper which will probably cost around $1,600+? Ooooorrr, do I just buy an XCR and SBR it. I have a 7.62x39 conversion for the XCR on order. And I'll switch that with the 5.56 as needed. Because of that I want a dedicated 6.8 gun. The XCR advantages we all know, it will shoot smoother and have adjustable gas system. Disadvantage is it will be considerably longer (I'll SBR it at 11") and a little heavier (which is the least of my concerns), but the length thing is big with me. I have that 9.25" POF and I love the shortness of it. And that 8" would be just wicked. BUT... the XCR will be so silky smooth.

Thoughts please.

Do you know nay place that makes barrels?

PDW your own XCR? It's a thought!
What's wrong with getting Alex/RobArms to custom build what you want? That way you get EXACTLY what you are looking for. :2cents: I say NASTY   :firepower:
You can only take the existing XCR upper but so short due to the gas system, as well as required dwell time.

That said, what is the point of an 8" rifle upper? Its useless. Its not even cool. Really.
Think I read a post here somewhere that said Alex said 11 inch was MAX om shortness. :2cents:
If you want shorter go will probably be better off with the LWRC...I just dropped my 6.8 barrel off today to get cut, will have it back next week. I went to 11". My buddy has a 6.8 XCR also so we can compare shooting the 16" and 11" side by side.
Aziator, be sure to post pictures. Sounds nice..... :2cents:
You know I will... ;D ;D

Alex said this about the PDW... "... we are working on a shorter upper receiver which would allow the use of 10" or 11" barrels - maybe even shorter"

Seeing how the XCR-L can go as small as 11", Id like to see the PDW go shorter than 10"

The shorter upper will allow moving the gas system back more, so there is enough barrel between the gas port and the muzzel.

:ahoy:
I want to see 7-9" on a PDW. Take a few inches off the rails, move the gas block back and shorten the piston. It should be do-able, just need to test it thoroughly.
Yeah, the problem with the XCR is the actual upper receiver is so long, being one complete piece, not including the gas system. I'd love to have a custom one built but I'd like the overall length to be shorter, not just the barrel. AR receivers are so tiny they can be shorter. Aziator I want info, info, info, on how that thing shoots @ 11". I'd like to wait but there is no telling how long something like that will take to get to market... if ever. I don't want to waste too much time dreaming about it. And you're right NY, short barrels are so... unattractive. I just like ugly, I think. If my wife ever read that I'd be dead.
The best thing to do may be to buy a second stripped receiver from Robarm and form 1 it. Then they could credit you the cost of the receiver when you eventually get the PDW, or build a 6.8. I was looking at my upper the other day thinking about chopping off 6 inches, then how to shorten the piston and move the gas block back. I would like to test it in 5.56 first as I think ifi it would cycle in that it would cycle fine in 6.8.

You would have to have a new barrel made to move the gas block back the 6" that you cut off the upper and making the piston connecting rod would be simple. The hard part would be having the barrel made
easy question. get both :D
Yes... and that was my first thought too!! But believe it or not my goal is to stop buying and take as many classes as I can per year.
I keed I keed...

what classes are you planning to take?

With Alex having the capability of turning his own barrels in house he should be able to do this no problem. I am assuming he got a 4 axis CNC lathe, Shouldn't be any problem machining a new shoulder for the Gas block.

I want to take a 10-8 carbine class, carbine @ rifles only, and a couple at TDI like their shotgun class. I'd like to take about 3-4 a year, every year. With what I spend in guns, I could probably do that.
My friend John Noveske has been to several 10-8 classes. He said they are woth the money big time! I want to spend some time at the farm in Utah this summer. No sense having the gun and not knwing how to get the most out of it.
