I picked up a used XCR light recently, haven't had a chance to take it to the dance yet, but my initial impressions are

It was made NY/NJ compliant with a brake permanently affixed, so I don't think I can change it to the new style gas system without a smith doing some work to remove the brake and then install the new system and re-pinning and welding the brake. That seems like a lot of work if this is not a crucial upgrade. What say you folks with experience. Is this a needed upgrade or just a nice thing to have?

Also, which parts if any have had breakage/wear issues so I can stock up on them?

I have the older style gas system and my rifle works with Wolf and all ammo. So for me, the old style is good enough and I have no need to swap it out.

When I get the AK kit though, I plan to get it with the newer style gas system.

I have to agree with Eric, my "old system" .223/5.56 worked great. I have since upgraded to a 6.8 SPC kit with the "new" gas system. NOT being a fan of the 5.56 I DID NOT upgrade the 5.56 gas system, as I don't anticipate going back to 5.56 often. >:D :2cents: ;D

The old system works just fine. :) It's really a major process to remove the MB/FH, you're right. Do you still live in NJ or NY?

Yes, I'm still in NY... that was why I bought this one used. Saved a few bucks, and it was already NY legal. Had I gone new I would have either needed to custom order or pay to have one with evil features neutered.

This is my new friend... any suggestions for a name? All firearms are to be named after women.

hey hr!

glad you like the new rifle.

the new gas system isn't a requirement at all, I think you'll need the upgrade if you want the 7.62x39 conversion though.

7.62 conversion is pointless if it uses a proprietary mag... in NY any mag manufactured after September 94 is limited to 10 rounds. Whats the point? Same reason I am not all that excited about the Masada/Bushy ACR... the calibre conversion means little to me if I'm limited to 10 rounds. I would much rather just grab an AK. I bought this intending it to just be 5.56.

Hiram, others have already said it but I will echo...Old system works fine unless you are shooting lots of Different kinds of ammo that may require a different gas setting. Unless you need to new one save the coin for something else. ( i have the new one due to 6.8 conversion and wouldn't go back to the old one). :2cents:
