Ok today was a gusty day out about 30-40 mile per hour winds. But I did do pretty good considering. I managed 1-1.5 inch groups at 50 yards with the Eotech and 147 gr South African surplus. So I didn't feel it was that bad but at 100 yards I didn't do so well 6-8 inch groups. I would attest that my not being able to see the target that well at 100 being the culprit as there was no magnification though a 1MOA dot on the eotech. Same effect as the Tavor at 100 yards with that damn 6MOA meprolight though the M14 did better because the dot is alot smaller on the Eotech. I did keep the targets but its too late to take pictures right now I will have to add those tomorrow as I have to work in the morning. Recoil was very low slightly less than my SKS-D in 7.62x39 which is quite shocking considering its firing alot more potent round. Recoil was still alot more significant than my XCR or Tavor though but thats understandable. I am not sure if its the shear weight of the thing that is causing the low recoil or if the Vltor is softening it. Anyways I will keep you guys posted and hopefully add pics tomorrow.

I have since put on my Millet TRS-1 4x-16x scope on my M14. I took it to the range with very poor results. I wasn't grouping anything near what I was hoping and now I think I am going to abandon my hopes of using it for hunting. I have a Harris Bipod with a picatinny mount on order and should be here this weds. I will go back to the range in a week to see if I can do any better after a thorough cleaning of the gun. I bought 3 boxes of 168gr Winchester supreme ballistic silvertips for hunting but if I can't group anything decent with my 150gr FMJBT AE and PMC I won't be wasting this expensive ammunition on this rifle. I will simply wait for my other 2 M14's and try my luck with them. Only problem with them is they will have 22 inch barrels and the front sight still on them, making them even more heavy. :-[

Mr. Smitty, Are you using a cheekrest on your rifle? If not, you may not be getting a good "cheekweld" making it hard to get a good group. There are "add on" leather rests for the M1/M14/M1As that may work for you. Good Luck

Yes I do have a cheekrest. As I have a Vltor Emod stock on it with the cheek rest.

Maybe the scope or mount is loose? Check everything then sandbag front and back to take that out of the equation. Even with the short barrel you should be able to get 2 - 3 inch groups or better. What range do you plan on engaging your game? I thought the ***** M-14s did better than that. Maybe the crown wasn't cut right when you had the barrel cut?

I have seen bad results from both the Troy and JAE stocks. I think the McMillan is the best for accuracy because you actually bed the stock. The Sage comes a close second. With the Sage you don't bed but the action is secured as you bolt the barrel to the stock (via gas block).

My M1A in Marstar stock (similiar to sage) kicks ass just as much as my AR-10 SupersSASS.

I don't know when I was using an Eotech I was getting 1-1.5 inch groups at 50 yards then with the magnifier I was getting 1 inch groups at 50 yards with about 4 inch groups at 100 yards. I put the millett on and my shooting went to hell like 14 inch groups. Then again I had to put a riser picatinny mount on when I put the millett on cause the scope was too big. Then again I didn't read the instructions on zeroing the thing before I took it to the range and it does have some funky dials on it compared to a standard scope like I am used to. The thing was also really dirty haven't cleaned in a while. Could be a number of factors. I am going to put the bipod on it and try again in 6 days after a good cleaning and thorough go over of all the mounting stuff. If I can't get good groups I might switch back to the eotech with magnifier and see if I can get decent groups and still if not I will put the mcs on a fresh new m14 with 22 inch barrel and see what it can do. I have 2 more coming so its no problem to check it out with another. If it works good with another rifle I will sell the shorty and just use the full sized m14 with the bipod of course.

Good shot Eric, I was going to go to stock bedding/lack thereof next. You may well have a scope that is broke (won't hold zero). If it shot with an Eotech it damn sure ought to shoot with another scope. After that last remark, I bet scope. :2cents:

Found out why I was losing accuracy. I finally took the gun apart for inspection and found that the Op rod guide was not in place and the pin that holds it in place was missing. Not good.

Going to take the thing to the range finally after fixing the Op Rod Guide problem. I guess its a pretty common problem among the chinese (garbage) M14's. I will post the details tonight. Damn its cold out though 34F. See how she likes the cold this thing.

Ok, took the M14 out and got suprisingly excellent results. A couple sub 1" groups with the worst being 1.5" at 100 yards. To say the least I was impressed. My old man was with me too and he was impressed as well. The sub inch groups were achieved with 165gr silver ballistic tip Winchester Supreme Ammo. But most groups coming in at about 1" even with the PMC 150gr FMJ stuff. I will be using this for hunting after all. ;D By the way my old man liked my XCR the most of all my rifles including the Tavor and Sig 551. Quote from him "that is one of the smoothest shooting rifles I have ever shot"
