Is it as simple as a new gas tube and gas block/dial?

I have a 1st gen M that is actually pretty accurate, but it's heavy. I plan to have ADCO flute the bbl but I'm also thinking of swapping to the Type 3 gas block and dial b/c it should be lighter somewhat than the Type 2.

A *potential* added bonus might be that the "accurized" versions of the Gen 2 -M had a tighter fitting gas tube and block. I'm betting that swapping to the Type 3 block and gas tube *might* help with accuracy over the sloppier design of the 1st Gen Type 2 block and tube configuration.

So....in short, what does it take to swap to the Type 3 gas system on the -M if you have the Type 2 currently? Is it just the Type 3 gas tube, Type 3 block and dial or do I need a different piston or any other parts as well?

Any insight is as usual, appreciated.

Thanks!

Block, tube, op rod. At least that's what I swapped. I'm away from the shop until next week not I'm pretty sure the piston head is different for type 3
Ah....gotcha. That makes sense. I thought the Type 2 was more of an M14 gas tappet type set up (IIRC). Hmm...so not *quite* as simple. I'll have to think that one over.

I am pretty confident I'll be ordering a competition length -L upper (and type 3 block) for one of my Ls that still has the full quad rail in the next few weeks/months.

I bought some of the Unimags to see if they actually work with the X39 XCRs. They are ridiculously overpriced, but I'm such a gear queer that even though my ASC (or are they CProducts) x39 Stanag mags work....I just hate the way they look. The Unimags look normal. We'll see if the gen 2s work as well as advertised (though they are only 25 rounds for x39). The Hill & Mac Gun Works mags still seem to be in development.

Have you been able to make this change? I'm debating on this or just getting a whole new barrel and op rod. The type 2 looks like a short and long stroke hybrid. I wonder if the type 3 would be smoother.

No. I decided to leave it as is. The Type 2 has a gas system similar to an M1A/M14.

I'm not comparing apples to apples since both my Type 3 Ms are 12 and 9.5" bbls.....but my 16" with the Type 2 doesn't seem any 'smoother'....but I wouldn't consider any of them 'harsh' either....not even the 9.5"....though it is a BLASTY bitch.
