With the "old" style gas system, is it possible to replace it with the "new" style?

I have a new Heavy barrel and getting an old light barrel and was thinking about swapping the new for the old. They interchangeable?

You'll have to trade the pistons back and forth. You'll end up wearing the threads out on the pistons AND your gas block locking bolt. I'd recommend getting a new one to go with the other barrel, just because. If you're not going to switch them a lot, then you can stick with the old one.
