Ordering an M, humbly requesting some advice from those in the know.

Hey all. I recently found the XCR-M lineup and it's what I have been looking for, for a very long time. I was previously going to get a SCAR or a Noveske N6, but not anymore. I digress.

I am overwhelmed by the choices available. I've chatted with Robarm a bit on IG/email, but still am unsure how to configure mine out. I will be ordering as soon as I can figure out a few bullet points. Perhaps those of you with an M would kindly give some advice? T'would be very much appreciate.

Use case: Standard battle rifle activity. Lots of off-hand suppressed use (suppressed with Dead Air Nomad most of the time). Some bench resting/prone shooting supported. Split drills, reloads, the general tactical stuff. I want something versatile and not particularly specialized for JUST off-hand use, or supported shooting. The ideal setup would be something that does both well. Going with a 16" barrel. I am stuck on the following points...

1. Heavy vs light contour barrel. My suppressor as configured is 17.5 ounces (Nomad-30 with key mount). Does hanging 17.5 oz off the end of a light barrel really cause substantial drooping and POI shift?

2. Mlok vs Keymod upper. I don't plan on mounting much, and it appears the keypad uppers are "sleeker" and lighter. But how much lighter? I have both systems in AR rifles and like them both. I don't really have a preference. I'm also stuck on standard VS Mini upper for the same reason. I think I like the visuals of the mini more, appears to be more proportionate looking.

3. GB2 vs GB3. Would be suppressed more than 50% of the time. Probably all of the time.

If any of you could touch on these points, and/or give some suggestions, I would be super grateful. THANK YOU. This is driving me nuts.

Overkill for a .308 rifle. Might want to go with a 10x LVPO like the Vortex Razor III or something.
Oh I agree. I’m not getting anything more extreme than a 1-10. I was just saying that nightforce makes nice stuff, and now I might want one of their LPVOs.
I finally had a chance to shoot the M today. I had a few malfunctions within the first magazine (I only shot about 10 rounds in my back yard, it started raining like hell). The first five shots or so cycled perfectly on gas setting 4 (GB3), then I got three malfunctions in a row, the bolt failed to pull the shell out of the chamber, so the shell and the bolt were firmly stuck in the locked position (it looked like the bolt was JUUUUUUST about to unlock). I was able to clear the first two by mortaring the charging handle, but had to take the spring out and tap the bolt backwards with a nylon punch to clear the third one. I then dialed the gas up to 5 (as the manual says when it starts malfunctioning), but it started raining hard enough that I didn’t go see if that made a difference. Another day.

I know malfunctions are to be expected when breaking in, so I’m not worried about it. I wanted to check with you guys and make sure that sounded somewhat normal. The ammo was Turkish ZSR (Imported by buffalo cartridge co) 7.62 Nato (should be spec, right?). I also didn’t lube the gun real good before shooting, maybe she needs some grease in strategic places…

On a good note, I was SHOCKED at how smooth and tame it feels. I couldn’t believe I was shooting a full-fledged 7.62 rifle. It felt like an AR, recoil wise. REALLY mild.

ZSR has been problematic in other calibers....have a friend that was having all sorts of issues with their 9mm in various pistols. And 7.62 NATO is not as hot as .308 Win...JFYI. But yes, the rifle should cycle either fine provided the ammo is decent.

I wouldn't be afraid to turn the gas up to 7 to break it in....and frankly, that's where I'd start for the first 200 rounds. If it runs 100% at that setting, then follow the ritual of loading one round and finding the lowest gas setting that will fire, eject and lock the bolt back on empty, then bump up the gas one more setting for reliability (while getting 8-12 feet of ejection).

Yeah, don't be afraid to run it slightly over-gassed until it starts to smooth out. My M upper settled at gas setting 3 after 150rds. Most of that was fairly spicy brass, though.

Ahh. Yeah I didn’t expect that ammo to be great, was just cheap. The cartridge looked good once ejected, I just figured it was either slightly out of spec, or the gas being on 4 didn’t give it enough oomph to exit the chamber. Maybe both.

I’ll go ahead and take your advice and give it some real gas until it smooths out. A bunch of lube too. Nothing polishes out freshly machined steel like brass and heat!!
Should I break it in with that cheap ZSR stuff or break out some of the decent .308 ammo?

I'd use the ZSR, unless for some reason it just won't fire it at the higher gas settings.....but frankly, it should. If it doesn't, I'd say something is off on the build of your rifle. That said, if it won't fire the ZSR reliably on the highest gas setting.....trying another brand of ammo is the first step to diagnosing the problem. If it shoots other ammo fine....it's the ammo (obviously).

So, got mine in today. I must say, this is a VERY finely made rifle. The fit and finish is great, charging handle is butter smooth, and the accuracy.....was way better than I expected.

This is a 5 rd group with CBC Sniper 168 gr SMK BTHPs at 100 yards. On the 5th shot (high right favoring) I pulled. Before that, it was a 0.5 MOA group. With the flyer, it measured around 0.8 MOA. I think this might be a 0.75 MOA gun all day, with the occasional <0.5 MOA 5 round group. Hitting 2 MOA targets out to 600 yards was a piece of cake. Barrel contour is the heavier option.

I shot about 40 rounds suppressed (all I had time for today), and not a single hiccup.
And for reference, I have medium sized hands with small thumbs 😀.

Very nice! That gives me confidence in mine, it’s also a heavy profile and stainless, I expect it to be a tack driver. I unfortunately haven’t shot it much yet as I have been incredibly busy with work, school, and new homeowner projects. The light at the end of the tunnel starts with graduation this weekend. I’ll have to take her out to range to celebrate. Best I can get at my home range is about 100 yards if I shoot from one end, past the house, and to the other. Sketchy if I’m not the only one home.
To mirror your sentiment, I agree fully. This is a truly fine weapon. The craftsmanship is excellent and the passion for the product is immediately apparent picking it up. A Scar 17 doesn’t hold a candle to this level of quality.

I had a super nice Stryker Industries hand selected M17 package that I loved...but sold it off because the platform destroys my very expensive thermal clip ons. This was set to be the replacement and it looks like that was a good call. I can't say for sure this is more accurate than my scar, because that thing shot bolt action precision rifle levels of accuracy. I'll have to test this XCR more, but as of right now it's off to a great start.

Everyone I’ve talked to has said that the Scar has a lot of issues, but accuracy is not one of them. I’ve heard repeatedly that they are very accurate.
Breaking optics, reliability, and cheap feel are the main complaints echoed. I’ve held several and they don’t feel like a piece of shit, but they don’t feel like they’re worth 3 grand either, IMHO. The XCR is a different story in that book. The quality and build is like a Koenigsegg. Elegant and finely machined, yet built like a brick shithouse (if you’ve never seen how monstrously tough a Koenigsegg is, look it up. It’s very impressive).
I think what the XCR-M offers makes it worth the weight over the scar, which I don’t personally find significant. I know it’s a couple full pounds, but I can heft and maneuver my HBAR M around and it doesn’t feel like a lot. I’m not a small guy though, so there’s that. Conversely, the Scar 17 feels TOO light to me, if that’s even a thing. It just feels like a toy. I know it’s made from really good polymer, I just enjoy a bit more heft. It’s like that joke where Mitch Hedberg is talking about how weight makes something feel like it’s not a piece of shit. Takes an empty radio, calls it a piece of shit, puts some batteries in it, and much better.
