Question on cutting a 16’ inch Barrel to a 12’ inch

So I took my 16’ barrel to my local gunsmith and asked him to cut and rethread it down to 12’ inches but he wasn’t sure if it would mess with the harmonics or blow the rifle up. Is it safe to have the barrel cut down to 12’ inches? I was really not trying to wait months to get an OEM barrel directly from RA. Any information would be appreciated.

You might need to go up a gas setting or drill out the gas settings a bit larger die to the reduced dwell time
I had an XCR bbl cut down....from 16" to 10.5".

It will be fine, but as mentioned, you may have to play with port sizes to get it running 100%.

Anyone know if the 12” OEM and 16” OEM barrels have different port sizes?

I don't know that anyone else has been posting to the stickied thread on port sizes. And...the ports are different for a Type 3 vs. Type 1 system (Type 2 I'd wager too).

In short, I'd be surprised if a 12" and 16" don't have different port sizes.

I think I listed my 11" 6.5G bbl port sizes in the stickied thread, but it's not applicable to a 5.56.....don't know that there's any 12" data.

*EDIT I did note some Type 1 data on a 6.8 12" bbl.....but that's not really relevant to a 5.56 12".
