Due to the insanely high amount of spam I have disabled registration temporarily. I can register new folks on a case by case basis if you know someone who wants to register, just let me know and I can manually create an account for them.

Re: REGISTRATION DISABLED

Appears that this is an internet wide attack on all SMF forums which started in early October upon the release of a forum spamming software called XRumer (it can even hack the gmail and hotmail security):

There are some suggestions on what to do about it. I'm going to try installing reCAPTCHA to see if that will fix the problem, some people on that thread have reported success with reCAPTCHA.

Re: REGISTRATION DISABLED

The forum software doesn't have a config option to allow an individual to submit a registration request, but requires that a mod review before completion?

Yes, I have that option. But sometimes the names of the users seem legitimate. The only way to know if someone is truely a spammer is after they have posted spam.

Registration has been turned back on and the new reCAPTCHA plugin is active. It's definitely a lot harder for a computer to guess the text (even for a human it seems!)

Anyways, if that article is correct and all of the spam we've been getting was in fact from bots then this change should eliminate all spam.

You can see what it looks like if you logout and try registering. There is a fancy new captcha widget. It even has a sound captcha if you're having a hard time with the visual one. The sound will read out numbers that you have to type in and there is background noise in the audio. Fancy stuff! 8)

In other news, the porn market has seem a abrupt decrease in revenue since industry spambots no longer have access to the xcr-forum. . . .

It's been a week since I made the upgrade, no spam. Looks like it worked! Yay!
