Let me guess....Palin's deep dark secret is that her daughter is Elvis' love child. Makes about as much sense as anything else :)

As an independent, I usually chalk up the talk of media bias as so much whining. However, the treatment of Palin by the media in this case is just horrible. Where is the fairness of unbiased reporting? Is Palin perfect? No, not by a long shot but who is? I really disagree with her stance on teaching creationism in the public classroom. However, that is a political issue. If the media wants to open a dialog on her political stance on issues then that is fair game. However, to treat her like some tabloid queen is shameful.
OK, here's my dirty little secret: I've been a member of "the media" for almost 30 years. And Mr. Chem is dead on with this observation.

This is part of what I think of as the "feeding frenzy" mentality. Think of sharks circling some bleeding creature in the water. BTW, it isn't necessarily a left vs right thing: Remember the endless messes with Bill Clinton? There's no justification for year after year of dredging up endless old rumors and innuendo.

I've heard people justify this kind of nonsense by saying it's about "character," and claim that the way a person conducts their private life is an indication of how they will conduct themselves in office. But there are two problems with this: EVERYONE has skeletons in their closet (including our greatest civilian and military leaders) and the scrutiny is not applied uniformly. This sort of nonsense is almost always the extension of political dirty tricks. Operatives pass rumors to unscrupulous reporters in the fringe media and they start digging the dirt right away.

Obama has been treated with kid gloves by ALL the media throughout this endless election. From what I've seen, it's mostly the shock&gossip sheets that are piling on Palin. The NYT and Time have actually done some pieces on her and her husband that were quite fair and (I thought) flattering. But what happens is that all of the coverage about a particular candidate, taken as a whole, creates a sort of public mythology about the person. And everything that person does is interpreted in the light of that mythology. Public figures and political candidates understand this and go to great lengths to manipulate the mythos, and some are very good at it (Ronald Reagan comes to mind). But it's easy for it to spin out of control, and when it becomes nasty enough, the most repellent of scandals will migrate from the scandal sheets to the MSM.

I think Palin makes a lot of people very uneasy because, by all accounts, she is a breed you simply don't see in politics any more -- a genuine, small-town, tough-as-nails conservative who is not beholden to a party line. She inspires trust in people -- even those who disagree with her -- and she thinks for herself.

In a political system where spinning the party line is everything, those sorts of folks usually can't even get a seat at the back of the room. Having her on stage will make a lot of folks on both sides of the aisle mighty uncomfortable.

I think Those are very astute observations.Let me tell ya boys,This chic has balls, big brass shiny ones.I also agree with another member(sorry can't remember which),we ain't seen nothing yet.She actually gave me cold chills when I listened to her speech.A pretty fucking rare occurrence for any politician nowadays,I think the last one was Reagan.
This might just re-energize the conservative base enough to get off there ass come November.Either way she's got moxie, and ain't afraid to kick ass when need be.Another rare trait among the "Washington elite" is intestinal fortitude.Who would have thought it would take a woman to show these dumbasses how to be a man.
I to was voting for McCain because the other option ain't fit to lead a girl scout troop, but with her on the ticket, there just might be hope yet.

Oh did I forget to mention she ain't bad looking for a Governor?

She is kinda hot look'in. That aside its gonna be a close run thing. Reality of it is guys that the advantage goes to the Dems. Its their race to lose. If the Democrat party eschewed the more unpalatable platforms that they have steadfastly clung too; gun control, neoEuropean social reforms/changes etc they would stand a very good chance of seizing the white house this go around. But I suspect they won't. The old school Dems are still deeply entrenched in the party hierarchy and of course Obama feels obligated to honor their core platforms in some manner. When pushed on these issues in the debates and elsewhere the Democrat candidates will be forced to reveal their intentions one way or the other. That may be just enough to squeak McCain et al in. I think both parties have something of value to offer the people and have over the years. It would be great if age old party ideology took a back seat to common sense. Yeah right. Never gonna happen!

One good thing about all this negative media attention is that it will fizzle out in a month.
So any negative stuff right before voting won't have any effect.

Obama has been at a loss to know how to deal with Palin. It is fun to watch politicians squirm.

Damn Terra ,did you have to do that ?
I have always liked Palin ,i was working in Alaska when she won the Governors race.
I mentioned her on some other forums and a lot of people started looking into her.
I knew she would go big time someday ,but not this fast.
What gets me is Gun Owners are starting to bad mouth her ?
Mostly about her being pro life , i think that issue is so over rated in Elections.
Palin could do little to change that ruling.
I just tell the ones who say things like that ,,,Fine Vote for the Golden Child , you will have your abortion rights , but when you do not have anymore firearms i hope you are happy.

What bigger "dark secret" can there be than being the spawn of Muslim extremists?
Actually the newest story is Sarah Palin referred to Barak as a "*****". This was apparently said by a waitress in Alaska who did not want to be named...

No I am not joking. Palin is literally having everything thrown at her.

I read in the paper this morning that Palin asked her local librarian how she felt about removing "questionable" books from the local library. The librarian refused and Palin asked for her resignation.

I telling you that I expect any day that the media will come out saying she is actually an alien from another dimension sent to Earth for the purpose of having Barry Manilow's love child.

I want to believe it is a good move but I just see the dems jumping on her weaknesses far too easily. Yes, there are some women who supported Clinton just because she is a woman but not in the numbers that would give the republican ticket a big boost. My sister in law is a major Hillery fanatic and organizer. She and her colleagues consider Palin as the republicans just giving lip service to women with no real support. In fact, she used the word "insulted" several times and "do the republicans really think we are that shallow?" I like Palin a lot but the McCain/Palin ticket just doesn't give me confidence that they can beat Obama. I may be completely wrong on this and I hope I am but this will either go down as the most brilliant or the dumbest move in recent political history.
Mr Chem,
Your sister in law is not unusual for a liberal. You see their view is that unless you are one of them that is enlightened then you cannot possibly be intellegent, have your own thoughts, be strong, have integrity, and there is no way you can have a family and work too! Isn't that what the feminists touted for so long? My , my how things suddenly change. The NAGS are actually condoning attacks on a woman! Can you say hypocrite?
That is the same hypocracy of Pro Choice. Liberals are not Pro Choice. Those are words, just words! If they were Pro Choice then they would believe in our choice to own a gun. If you are truthful then call it what it is. You are pro abortion or you are pro life. You are pro gun or you are anti gun! Liberals hide behind the truth because if you call something what it is you are now exposed to reality and many of them cannot handle reality! Because those are just not words I truly feel sorrry for them.

Interesting point of view Col Maddog. I never thought of correlating pro-abortion and pro-gun rights this way. Might make for some interesting discussions with pro-abortion/anti-gun liberals.

Sorry, couldn't resist posting this:

Sarah Palin Is No Messiah

Sorry to burst the bubble of hopelessly optimistic conservatives,
but Sarah Palin is not the Messiah. If several dozen alleged
"limited government" conservatives could take over both houses of
Congress in 1994, and accomplish exactly JACK SQUAT, why on earth
would you expect one person, running for a mainly symbolic office,
to reign in the federal leviathan? (Try looking up all the things
the 1994 "conservative" Republicans promised to do, and see if they
did them.)

Yeah, she sometimes says stuff that sounds like she's for limited
government (in between parroting the standard Bush administration
war-mongering, and supporting the heinously destructive, immoral
"war on drugs"), but so what? When are those of you who like
"limited government" going to stop falling for Republican
establishment bullpoop?

John McCain is both a war-mongering fascist and an economic
socialist--the worst of both worlds. (The media bizarrely calls
that being a "moderate.") And he was chosen by the Republican
party, NOT the American people, and not even by the Republican
voters. Did any of you conservatives notice that your party offered
you a half dozen left-wing collectivists to "choose" from? They put
up half dozen Nixon clones, and then asked you to "choose" which
not-at-all-conservative identical twin you'd like.

And when LOTS of you said, "Actually, we like Ron Paul, because we
actually want less government," the Republican party told you, in
no uncertain terms, "Tough luck!" They maligned, marginalized,
demonized, and censored Dr. Paul every chance they had. Anything
resembling libertarianism, or even Constitutionalism, was
constantly condemned as extremist, impractical and unreasonable, if
not fringe lunacy.

But now, suddenly, out of nowhere, the Republican control freak
club pulls Sarah Palin out of a hat, and says, "Look,
conservatives, here's one you'll like!" Don't you know when you're
being played? Do you really think that party that foisted upon you
John McCain--that devout enemy of the First, Second, Ninth and
Tenth Amendments (among others)--suddenly believes in the
Constitution? Do you think selecting Palin actually means the
successors to the Bush regime are going to voluntary give up some
of their power?

Everything either face of the ONE ruling class does is a show, and
nothing more. It is all designed to sell you a lie, and every time
you vote Republican or Democratic, you prove what good salesmen the
federal propagandists are--while also proving how gullible you are.
And Sarah Palin, with her pretty face and almost sane rhetoric, is
going to dupe you again. Do you really think Mr. Nationalist
Socialist McCain, or his handlers, would choose as running mate
anyone who would in any way undermine the totalitarian agenda of
the Republican establishment? Even if she wanted to, do you really
think there is the slightest chance that Palin will ever be given
the chance to reduce the federal monster, or even slow down its
growth? (If she actually believed in "limited government," would
she be portraying John McCain as the Second Coming?)

You, the American people, gave the Republican party both houses of
Congress, and then the White House. So what were all their
"conservative" accomplishments? What "limited government" type
stuff did they do with that power? Well, they drastically INCREASED
federal spending, shredded the First, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth
Amendments, and created the biggest federal bureaucracy in history--
which is really saying something. And you're going to vote for them
AGAIN, aren't you?

Now, every time I point out what a bunch of crooks and liars one
party consists of, lots of people accuse me of supporting the other
party. The elitist communists that wear the label "Democrat" are no
more for the "little guy" than Joseph Stalin was. They are neither
better nor worse than the Republican tyrants, because they are the
SAME THING. They say very slightly different things, and then do
the SAME things, every time: take more of your money, control more
of your life, and cause more problems so they have an excuse for
giving themselves more power. And every time you vote for either
one, you are sending this message, loud and clear, to the American
tyrants: "Yes, I AM dumb enough to keep falling for the same old
lies and tricks, so keep right on betraying and oppressing me, and
I'll keep right on supporting you!"

If you vote Republican, you deserve to be lied to, silenced,
tortured, robbed, terrorized, defrauded, spied on, and controlled.
Of course, if you vote Democrat, you also deserve all of that.
However, some of us are a little tired of being lied to, silenced,
tortured, robbed, terrorized, defrauded, spied on, and controlled,
just because YOU keep falling for the same old tyrant propaganda
and lies. So stop it!

My wife worked on Palins 06 campaign to become Governor.
Sarah is for real ,if anyone's being played it would be her.
I agree with everything you said lex , its sad but true.
I met her Husband on the North Slope once when he was delivering supply's , and i knew his boss who was also his best friend.
Like you i don't care for McCain one bit , He has k managed to stay out of the limelight and the hard questions while the Democrats were fighting.
Now we have Palin ,and she took the heat off him again , by having it put on her.
We hear about Obama all the time ,and then about Palin , The two we don't hear much about is McCain and Biden.
Old world Senators and most likely worse than their running mates.
When is the Media going to ask McCain about the time he said he was going to change party's to give the Democrats the majority ?
Or how about when he was pals with Kennedy, and tried to sneak Amnesty in on us ?
This is starting to look like just a new trick to get the old guard back into the White House agian.

i hate politics, it is all BS.

i myself am for less-taxes, anti-welfare, pro-gun, pro-choice, pro-evolution, pro-same-sex-marriage... how should I vote? the only reason why i am a republican is because i like less taxes and like guns... less-taxes and anti-welfare are the 2 biggest issues with me.

palin said creatism should be taught along side evolution. that sounds backwards a$$ to me. anyone who doe not believe in evolution just got their head stuck up where the sun does not shine.

really... if 2 consenting adults want to marry each other why should they not?

I'm with you. I vote Republican simply because it is the closest option that supports my views and is more likely to win than libertarian. If I vote libertarian I may as well give the vote to the liberals and then like the UK, we're all fucked.
