This is a really tough question to answer. I moved literally thousands of vests in the last year to numerous military and LEO. Brands and price points vary so much. I am using a couple of solutions but my fav is actually an inexpensive vest with fixed pouches. Then I have a custom USGI MOLLE rigged I customized for carbine class.

My advice is this, dont believe spending more gets you more, and dont think buying cheap gets you the same performance as something expensive.

Going the USGI route tends to be the happy middle. Lowest bidder prices, but milspec performance that will hold up well under heavy use. Bare MOLLE vest and adding what fits your shooting style will get the best results.

At any rate, you can probably coast with a cheap vest. People who arent die-hard, sworn or enlisted seldom drive their vests hard enough to "break" them. Hell, even a harness with open top pouches should be able to fit most of your needs. The last few carbine classes had quite a few people going the KISS/lightweight route.

Utility. Thanks for your input variablebinary.
Cool stuff Jack. You got my wheels turning!
Anything from Arktis in the UK or Merom Dolphin.
Thanks MickeyC, Thats some heavy duty stuff.
I've been meaning to get some of this stuff too...

vb3, where are good places to look for 'going the usgi' route?

I think my needs would boil down to holding 6-8 mags, drop pouch, and a camelback. no armor stuff or whatever. should I just find a good molle base vest and add the stuff? simple chest rigs seem ok too...
What is vb3? I typed it in & didn't get anything USGI.

I think a chest rig would work best, get a molle based one that you can configure. You can always add armor later underneath if you wanted to. I am in the process of finding a new setup, I dont like the army issue Interceptor. I have my own body armor that is lighter (pilot stuff) and just need to get a vest to wear over it. When I find something suitable I will post pics.
These are very nice for a dump pouch...

I have the med size.

LA Police gear has good prices as well

vb3 = variablebinary ;)
And Variable Binary if my cosmology is correct is a binary star (i.e. two stars revolving around a central axis) which vary in brightness.

The 3 part I dunno.
I like mine a lot. Got it from 1337 tactical for about $80+shipping. Holds 15 AR-15 mags + radio + got slots for front and rear armour plates. Even if you don't use all the pockets for ammo, you can find other stuff to put in it.

I also like this vest, Got it for $49+tax at a recent gun show. Holds only 6 mags, but is very handy with other pockets, and a holster for a side arm. No slots for armour plates though.
