I am thinking that I would like to use an ACOG. It is getting harder to shot with iron site any more so I am thinking that some type of scope is in order. I have read several reviews of the ACOG's and feel that a low power scope in the 3 or 4 power range may just be what I need for my aging eyes.

I am think one of the models with the BDC type reticle? What do you who own these type of sights suggest. ???

You can see all the recticle patterns and pretty good descriptions of each ACOG model at trijicon.com.

Personally I'm partial to the military models... have have the TA31RCO-A4 (20" rifle), and wouldn't mind getting the -M4 model one day as well... same recticle pattern, but with the BDC scaled for use with the carbine barrels.

The fellows at Trijicon forwarded me all the drop data on all their different reticles.

If you know what round you're going to run, I can give you an approximate "best reticle", along with deviations......

Warning: I've got an ACOG, it sets in my parts bin. Not that it's not a good optic, but if your eyes need a focus, the ACOG doesn't allow that.

Not sure what you mean by need a focus?

I am currently running a Eotech 512 on my Fal carbine and have not problems with it. I was thinking that I would be using the acog on my 5.56 XCR and may consider using it also on the XCR-M once it is out, as both they have nearly the same trajectory.

"Need a focus" - as in "your eyes don't work quite like they should >:D

Really, my perscription is really mild, but I'm slightly nearsighted. That doesn't play well with the ACOG - mine is the military model 4X32JN8:12.

An EoTech (got one of those too) is a holographic sight - it's set to focus 'at infinity' (by definition of holography). Ditto that for the Aimpoint. With glasses, mine is ideal - without glasses the reticle of my EoTech is fuzzy enough it's bothersome. The Aimpoint dot -without glasses- is just barely more fuzzy and still totally usable for me. Thus I use the Aimpoint preferentially.

The ACOG isn't a holographic sight, so it doesn't focus the same as an EoTech or Aimpoint. It's not that I can't see the reticle on the ACOG, it's just that the Bindon concept doesn't much work with my eyes. Specifically, the chevron is a red dot, and the bullet drop compensator is a fuzzy line without numbers. Unless I work to focus and the range isn't that close - then I can bring the reticle into focus.

I like the ACOG, no question. For me though, it just needs a focus capability.

Well I did not know that there was no focus adjustment, that will rule out the acog as I am nearsighted and just recently have determined that I need bifocals as I can no longer read books with my regular glasses.

I will then have to see about an aim point or scout type scope. Thanks for the tip Bravo.

sitting in the parts bin eh? I'll trade you some wrenches, a few rusty nails, and some pocket lint for it >:D

on top of that I'll even throw in three-fitty ;D

Actually, I gotta dump another $300 into it. Gonna discuss this with Trijicon at SHOT.

It seems that through some 'rough handling' and age, not only has the fiber optic started crazing (normal) but the elevation / windage adjustment is no longer responsive.

THAT is why I've still got it in the parts bin - the $300 is for a factory refurb. Then I can sell it and actually get something out of it.

Before I do that though, I'm gonna hit 'em up about fitting one to my eye. Should be interesting.......

cavegeo,

I purchased an Aimpoint M4 for my SBR XCR and I love it! They are so easy to use. If you can see the red dot in the scope, anywhere, and you can put that dot onto the target, you will hit it every time. It doesn't matter if it's at the edge of the field of view, or dead center on the scope, you will hit it anyway. I can't say enough about it and if you are considering one let me know and I will point you in the right direction to get it at the best price.

ACOGS are nice but be sure you know what you plan to use it for. They are not very good for CQB and
for 900-1100 bucks there are better options.

I own an Eotech a Aimpoint ML3 and out to 100 yards I can do great with no magnification. I plan to add the 3x magnifier to the Aimpoint XCR set up.

I also own a Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm MR/T M2 and in my opinion out preforms the ACOG and can be had for about 800 bucks. I recommend the LaRue mount as well.

I was planning to use it for intermediate ranges out to 300 or 400 yards that why I was interested in the ACOG with a BDC reticle but do to the lack of ability to focus I am know thinking of an aimpoint. I already have an Eotech and may add a magnifier at some time. Thanks for the info if you have other suggestion I am all ears.

Ditto that, check plus.

With either the EoTech or the Aimpoint (mine is an M3 with 2 MOA dot) hitting at 400 is cake - that's on half-sized targets. Specifically pepper poppers. Obviously I'm talking about going prone for those distances. Magnification for out to 400? Nah - not really necessary. When I was running the Aimpoint M2 on the XCR, I had problems hitting at 300 reliably - the difference was the 4 MOA dot versus the 2 MOA dot. As far as speed goes, my eye catches the 2 MOA dot just as fast as the 4 MOA dot.
I recommend the LaRue mount as well.
Ditto that, check plus. Been using that for a couple years now, and only gonna buy more of 'em. I can't say that about the ARMS stuff - I broke those.

If things work like I think they will (the fixed stock change to bring up my line of sight - not just non-folding but non-telescoping as well) I'm putting on a Redfield 1-4X24mm. I'll mount it in two LaRue Aimpoint mounts, using their 1" reducers.

Of course, that's assuming things work out...... should get the parts back from the machinist hopefully tomorrow. As far as buying the LaRue mounts though, that might have to wait a month or so - seems Christmas is costly already :p

I have been wrestling with optics options myself. I havent come up with a solution yet. I was hot on an SN4 but...have held up. The meopta K-Dot has caught my eye as reports have it as the only illuminated 1x4 other then the S&B Short Dot as being visable in full daylight. I love my aimpoint and can hit far with it BUT that is when shooting at known targets. A two way range requires target ID. To ID at 300 or so requires some magnification at least for me :)

In my experience the 4X is useless at close ranges like inside a house. You need to be about 20 meters away before 4X is usable. 3X works at all ranges. I like variable scopes. Make sure you set it to 3X or less when you put your gun away. You want to be prepare if you need it in a hurry.
