I don't have a whole lot of experience with red-dot sights. I had an aimpoint on my first 5.56 (a mini 14, almost 30 years ago) and
based on comments here, got an Eotech for my XCR -- and it was a revelation.

But I'm getting a short-barrelled plinker and want to put a similar optical sight on it. How do the c-mores compare? What else do you guys like? How are they different?

thanks for the help

We issue SPOT red dots in 3 and 6 MOA where I work and I have a personal one and they have proven to handle everything cops can throw at them. For the price, usually $150, they are tough to beat. The local dealer got one for T&E, mounted it, zeroed, and then removed it. He tossed it out the window at 40 mph re mounted and it shot to the same point. It convinced him and I that they are tough enough.

We have quite a few guys running BSA's as well and I haven't seen or heard of any problems with them. The earlier ones weren't bright enough for full sun but the latest ones seem better. I zeroed one for a guy on a bright sunny day and could see it. The worst thing on them is the mount screws/nuts are cheap and can strip if you take them on/off alot or over torque them. It is a pretty cheap fix to get new screws. I know a lot of people talk bad about them, but they have stood up to the rigors of police work. That said, everyone has back up irons, just in case.

That sounds like a tough little sight, and the price is certainly good.

thanks for the info!

I have the Eotech and love it. I heard tha Mr. Dillon (owner of Dillon) likes to mount the C-More on his Little Bird helicopter to use as a sight...That SPOT sounds tough. I will probably go with another Eotech or maybe a C-more.

Guys,

I appreciate the replies. A couple of questions: What are the general guidelines on choosing the correct MOA for these?

What are the actual differences between these kinds of sights: for example, between a tubeless design (like the eotech) and the tube design (like the SPOT or the Aimpoint)?

thanks for all the help

For all intents and purposes, there's no difference between the EoTech and the Aimpoint.

The Aimpoint is SLIGHTLY more durable, and has a better battery life (especially so with the newer models) - the EoTech has a better field of view and takes (with the right model) cheaper / easier to come by batteries.

I've got both, I use the Aimpoint.

If your eye picks up the circle on the EoTech, that's a GREAT way to go. My eye instinctively looks for the dot, and the 1 MOA dot of the EoTech isn't fast for me. The 2 MOA dot on the Aimpoint is fast, and I can hit reliably to 500 yards with it. Not good hits, but hits none the less - but at 400 the hits are GOOD.

With the 4 MOA Aimpoint, I had difficulties hitting past 300, and every now and again I'd drop a shot at 300. It's the dot, which covers so much of the target at that range it was hard to get on and stay on.

FWIW, neither the EoTech nor the Aimpoint has a good mounting solution out of the box. The EoTech either wants to come loose unless loctited (which I don't do) or requires a QD lever mount. The ARMS QD lever mounts are rubbish, they shoot loose over time. Likewise, the A+ answer for the Aimpoint is a LaRue mount.

What size dot you get depends on what you're going to do with it. If you're only hitting inside 300, then the 4 MOA will be fast-fast. Interestingly, my M2 with the 4 MOA dot wasn't any faster for me than the M3 with the 2 MOA dot - maybe it's just me. Anything larger than 4 MOA will decrease your effective range further.

The EoTech is a nifty tool. If I could center my eye on the circle instead of the dot, I'd call it the best all-around. The 1 MOA dot allows precise hits past 400, the circle (if I could center on it subconsciously) would be fast-fast for up close.

Hope that helps!

I agree with just about everything that has been mentioned in previous posts.

I own an Eotech 512 that is currently on my XCR with pencil barrel and I love it. The mounting screws have never come loose so it's never fallen off. I guess I'm the one lucky guy. I also own an Aimpoint ML3 with a 2MOA Dot.mounted with a LaRue cantilever mount atop my XCR Heavy barrel.

Both are very quick on target but the EoTech is faster... probably because of the circle dot reticle.

Bravo is in luck because I heard Eotech has models coming out with the Dot Reticle for Aimpoint users for easier transition from one to the other.

I also have a Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm MR/T M2 that;s mounted with LaRue Tactical SPR QD Mount 56994 LT104-30 atop my bad ass AR Franken gun. ;D

So you need to ask yourself 3 things

What am I gonna be primarily using this gun for ? 100 yards and in ? 100 yards and out ?

How much cash am I willing to spend on quality optics / Sights ? ;)

Do I want to do this again because I fucked up and didn't get what I really wanted ?

Buy the optic for the specific use of the gun... :2cents:

Assuming you are a fairley good shooter....... The Eotech at 0 - 300 Meters. Or if beyond 300 meters, a variable scope ( your choice of recticle), 1 to 5 power. Research, choose potential optic choices, shoot potential optics, then buy your favorite. Treat it like your wife(s)/girlfriend(s). ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :2cents:

Gunner,

Any man who can handle more than one wife has my respect!

I'm a pretty fair shot. I shot competitively when I was a kid, but that was only at 100 yards. And I do like the Eotech I've currently got, and don't plan on doing any shooting over 1,000 feet, so I may just get another.

thanks for the advice.

The ONLY thing I don't like about my Eotechs are they are BATTERY powered. If I am going hunting, or to the range, I change out my batteries, just to be sure. It's fast on target, and that's what I like about it. :2cents:

Yeah, that's one of the big advantages to the Aimpoint. They claim the life of the battery is 10 years. I don't know if that's true or not, but I know I leave mine on continually (and loaded continually) - it's been on that battery for well over a year.

You're right - I was looking at the low power setting (NVD), since there is no "off".

5 years at half-power.

Well I think the CompM4 is even longer than 5.5 years, but to me, beyond that, whats the point... 5 years, 8 years... I'm going to change the battery more often than that just for insurance anyway. As long as it can actually go 1 or 2 years continuously, reliably, I'll be happy.

On my XCR SBR I have the Aimpoint Comp M4 and I just LOVE it:

With a battery life of 80,000 hours , or 3,333 days, or 476.19 weeks, or 39.69 months, or 9.13 years on low settings, and has 16 brightness positions: 7 NVD, 9 daylight (1 is Extra Bright) and all that on one (1) good quality AA sized battery, that's good enough for me!

I would recommend that you go for the LaRue mount, and LaRue have a VERY good deal with their mount and the Comp M4:

This is REAL good value deal! "Being on this forum, I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true"! ;D
