But somehow they still squeeze enough out of us to mis-manage it. Scrape and scrimp to build a school, but you'll have some smooth roads to drive on coming through the state. The 'good ole boy' network is alive and well.

The only tax originally was a tax to support a standing army and navy.

Go to the UK. Door knob tax. Window tax. Closet tax. TV tax. Road tax. They've got a billion of 'em too.
Taxes have been imposed by governments for centuries. Taxes were normally applied to international trade and levied on goods coming in and out of a country, but, in the 1798 England introduced an income tax as a means to pay for the Nepolionic Wars, starting at 0.8% and rising to 10%.

In 1961 the governments of both sides implemented income taxes to help pay for the war. The first rate was 3%.

If you look at pictures of old English buildings you will see bricked up windows. That was how people faught "window" tax. I must admit that this country has the higest property taxes of any country I have ever lived in. I pay over $7000 per year in my house here, but my equivalent home in the UK is $2500 and my Spanish place is $48. Yes forty eight dollars, not a mis-print.

Governments will always find a way to raise money and Obama is mad if he thinks he will cover shortfalls by being more efficient. Historically it is easier for Governments to simply raise tax levels or invent new ones.
